Purpose of Job:
Responsible for reprocessing surgical instruments in a sterile manner and packaging appropriately for use.
Qualifications: High school diploma. Central Sterile Tech/Scrub Tech Certification preferred. Prefer one (1) year experience in a central sterile department. BLS required within six (6) months of hire. Knowledge of operating room policies and procedures. Knowledge of OSHA, AAMI, and AORN Standards and Recommended Practices for Sterilization and Disinfection. Knowledge of surgical equipment and instruments. Skilled in instrument and equipment maintenance by effectively checking instruments, autoclaves and supplies and stocking/repairing as appropriate. Primary Responsibilities:
Supports the mission, vision, and values of the organization. Follows established protocols to maintain a clean, safe environment for patients, personnel, and visitors. Cleans instruments by hand after surgical procedures are completed to prepare them for sterilization in the autoclave. Follows established protocols for preparing, using, and disposing of cleaning chemicals. Packages (i.e. wraps, places in container, etc.) instruments in appropriate manner to be placed in the autoclave or Sterrad. Places sterilized instruments in sterile supply room in appropriate area to be pulled for future cases. Communicates supply and equipment repairs to appropriate personnel. Maintains accurate documentation on policies, procedures and sterilization records as recommended by AAMI Standards. Performs miscellaneous tasks and errands, i.e. transport labs/specimens to other facilities, time will be compensated when applicable. Demonstrates current competencies applicable to the position. Organizes and prioritizes tasks efficiently. Interacts effectively with physicians, nurses, other health care professionals, patients. Communicates pertinent information and suggestions to team leader. Prioritizes tasks by importance and demand. Follows employee handbook guidelines in regards to sick time, vacation, and dress code. Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
Primarily operating room setting. Frequent contact with diverse individuals Exposure to infection, bodily fluids, sharp instruments Variety of standing, walking, lifting, bending, stooping, twisting Must be able to stand 6-8 hours/day Hand and eye coordination Manual and finger dexterity Corrected vision and hearing to within normal range Requires occasional lifting/carrying/moving of equipment and supplies up to 50 pounds Frequent stress from need to turn over some instruments in a rapid succession This description is intended to provide only basic guidelines for meeting job requirements.
