Responsibilities The Health Information Coder provides exceptional customer care to the SMRMC consumer, visitor, and staff. The HIM Coder checks the coding queues daily, working the highest dollar and the oldest accounts first, using complete electronic health encounters to select the most accurate and applicable codes. The HIM Coder communicates with the Coding Supervisor and Billing Staff daily via Microsoft Teams or Paragon Tickler system to resolve claims efficiently. Participates in bi-weekly meetings, and monthly, quarterly, and yearly coding education through various sources. Maintains coding certification and continuing education units. Willing to perform any task assigned by supervisor or Department Head to help complete tasks. Review and code patient encounters of all specialty types for Professional Fee Coding for outpatient clinic visits. Ensure all primary and secondary codes are accurately sequenced based on the patient's reason for the visit. Report missing or incomplete documentation and submit queries to providers as needed. Meet daily coding productivity and quality standards. Review charge code entries for accuracy and make corrections as needed. Serve as a resource regarding insurance denials and coding questions from the Revenue Cycle Back Office. Adhere to coding guidelines and legal requirements to ensure compliance with regulations. Complete required continuing education to maintain credentials and license. Support and assist the Coding Manager and Revenue Cycle leadership on special projects. Work with other departments and attend internal/external meetings and training.
