Job DescriptionJob Description
Mechanical Engineer Help Shape the Future of Advanced Optical Defense Systems!
Camarillo, CA (Onsite)
Work on cutting-edge sensor technology at a fast-growing defense startup entering full-rate production.
Opportunity Summary
A rapidly scaling defense technology startup is seeking a hands-on Mechanical Engineer to support the development and manufacturing of innovative IR, lidar, and laser-based sensor systems. With production accelerating for a key defense program, this role blends mechanical design, manufacturing support, and production tooling, offering a rare opportunity to make a direct impact on systems actively being deployed. Youll join a highly capable team at a pivotal moment as they ramp from engineering development into high-rate production. Your work will include designing robust mechanical components and fixtures for optoelectronic systems, supporting performance upgrades, and contributing to next-gen designs.
About Us
We are a defense-tech company redefining whats possible in the world of compact sensors and directed energy. Our team has deep roots in the defense and photonics ecosystem, with alumni from leading aerospace and semiconductor companies. Our mission is to build precision-engineered sensor systems that support security and tactical edge applications. We're lean, fast-moving, and fully engaged in programs that are already fielded, offering both stability and excitement as we grow.
Job Duties
Design and develop precision mechanical components, fixtures, and systems for advanced optoelectronic products
Create detailed models and drawings using SolidWorks; generate accurate BOMs and support DFM practices
Lead and iterate tooling and fixture designs to support semi-automated production lines
Collaborate closely with engineers and technicians to support prototype builds, production assembly, and packaging
Apply a variety of fabrication techniques including CNC machining, 3D printing, and extrusions
Troubleshoot mechanical performance issues and implement upgrades for cost-effective manufacturability
Support ongoing and next- development cycles for products already in fielded use
Contribute to performance-enhancing redesigns, yield improvements, and ruggedization efforts
Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent hands-on experience
2+ years of experience in mechanical design, ideally for hardware intended for small-batch or mid-rate production
Proficiency with SolidWorks and related CAD tools
Strong grasp of mechanical design fundamentals and practical DFM/DFA practices
Hands-on experience with 3D printing, CNC machining, and typical hardware assembly
Comfortable working independently in a fast-paced environment with evolving priorities
Clear, logical approach to design reviews, documentation, and team collaboration
Experience
Exposure to light automation or electromechanical systems (Python, Arduino, or PLC a plus)
Experience designing ruggedized components for defense or industrial systems
Familiarity with vacuum packaging, thermal design, or mechanical assembly for photonics systems
Previous work supporting transition from engineering to production (tooling, fixtures, and cost reduction)
Why Join Us
Work on fielded defense systems making an impact today
Huge opportunity for growth as we expand production and build new product lines
High-ownership environment with a small, elite team
Flexible work environment with hands-on learning
Medical, dental, and vision insurance
