About This Role

In Oak Park D97, the assistant principal serves as a key administrator, leading alongside the building principal. With a focus on improving student learning experiences and academic achievement, assistant principals in our district are charged with supporting the full spectrum of instructional, operational and leadership functions of the principal. Assistant principals coach and develop teachers to enhance core instruction and ensure equitable access to programming. Serving as an instructional leader, they integrate curriculum delivery and social/emotional support. They play a vital role in school transformation, engaging students, staff, and the community, with a focus on equitable curriculum delivery. They facilitate smooth transitions for Kindergarten and 5th grade students and families. They play a vital role in supporting student supervision and conduct.

The assistant principal will assist and support in attracting, developing and retaining highly effective talent that can ensure universal student success and support of the district's equity commitments as expressed in Board Policy 7:12: Ensuring Racial and Educational Equity.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Instructional Leadership & School Vision Supports School and District Improvement: Supports school and district goals. Supports all aspects of the school to support the holistic development of all students. Demonstrates a commitment to within school, between school and districtwide improvement. Work with teacher leader teams to develop, implement and progress monitor school improvement plans Attend professional learning communities (ie grade level meetings, benchmark meetings, problem-solving meetings, etc)

Dynamic, Differentiated and Culturally Responsive Instruction: Supports a rich and collaborative instructional culture by helping to build teachers' collective efficacy, in an effort to lead for equity as outlined in the 2022 Danielson Framework for Teaching. Ensures Student Success: Supports equitable practices to ensure the academic and social-emotional success of a diverse student population, with a deliberate focus on students with special needs. Fosters a school-wide culture where all students, including those with IEPs and 504 plans, are seen as full members of the learning community and have equitable access to rigorous instruction and support. Helps to build the capacity of general and special education teachers to collaborate effectively, differentiating instruction, and implementing evidence-based interventions. Helps to develop structures and practices that support collaboration between teachers and teaching assistants in order to strategically support student learning goals Demonstrates the ability to integrate instructional concepts such as Universal Design for Learning (UDL), multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS), and positive behavior interventions and supports (PBIS) to proactively meet diverse student needs. Facilitates effective communication and partnerships with families of students with disabilities, ensuring their voices are heard and their involvement is valued in educational planning and decision-making. Supports the strategic use, allocation, and organization of resources, including the potential of teacher assistants (TAs) to support special education services and positive student experience.

Drives Data-Informed Instruction: Participates in driving a data-informed instructional culture by helping to build teacher capacity to analyze student achievement and facilitate school improvement. Fosters Educational Cohesion: Collaborates with principal and district administrators to create a cohesive PreK-8 educational journey, seamlessly integrate programs. Monitors School Progress: Monitors school progress by seeking and analyzing feedback from all stakeholder groups, including students, parents, staff, and district leadership. Manages Student Assessment: Coordinates and administers local and state student assessment programs in collaboration with the building principal. Staff Management & Professional Development Supervision and Evaluation: Supervises, coaches, and formally evaluates the performance of all assigned staff with a focus on continuous improvement and accountability. Fosters Professional Growth: Promotes and facilitates relevant professional growth opportunities and in-service training to help all staff integrate new skills and improve their craft. Cultivates School Culture: Fosters a collaborative and empowering school culture where staff work cooperatively and are celebrated for achieving high levels of student achievement. Talent Management: Participates in the full hiring process, including the recruitment, screening, interviewing, and mentoring of new staff, as needed. School Operations & Fiscal Management Supports Daily Operations: Supports the school's daily operations, including the organization and administration of all programs and use of facilities, to ensure a smooth, safe, and efficient learning environment. Ensures Health and Safety: Ensures the health, safety, and security of all people, buildings, and property by leading safety inspections, drills, and emergency preparedness, as needed. Aligns District Practices: Collaborates with principal and district administrators on the operational alignment of personnel for safety and restorative practices. Manages Scheduling: Assists in developing and managing student and staff schedules in accordance with all district policies and collective bargaining agreements. Student Support & Management Student Conduct: Maintains high standards of student conduct. Addresses student discipline while upholding due process rights and favoring restorative practices in accordance with the Oak Park D97 Student and Family Handbook. Attendance: Supports student attendance accounting and record-keeping to ensure compliance with all state requirements. Supervises Student Activities: Supports the principal in providing supervision or ensuring there is supervision for all extracurricular activities, student events, and designated student supervision periods (e.g., lunch, arrival/dismissal, after school, evening events). Coordinates Student Services: Collaborates with student services personnel to ensure the effective implementation of all student support programs and services. Community Engagement & Communication Relationship-building: Supports an atmosphere where all families and students feel seen, heard and welcome into the building. Maintains strong, positive relationships and two-way lines of communication with families and community members. Thoughtful Engagement. Remains curious and slows down when difficult situations arise. Models a restorative mindset in conflict resolution, allowing for clearer communication, deeper understanding, and more effective problem-solving. Manages emotions, assesses situations thoughtfully, and responds in a way that recognizes strengths, promotes a learning culture and positive outcomes rather than escalation. Leadership, Compliance & Professionalism Assumes Administrative Responsibility: Assumes full administrative responsibility for the school in the absence of the principal. Ensures Compliance: Ensures fidelity and compliance with all Board of Education policies, collective bargaining agreements, administrative procedures, and state/federal laws. Upholds Professional Ethics: Exhibits the highest standards of ethical behavior, integrity, and confidentiality in all school-related matters. Models Professional Growth: Assumes responsibility for one's own professional growth by reflecting on practice, seeking feedback, and staying current with educational research and best practices. Represents the District: Maintains proactive communication with district leadership and represents the school at required meetings, committees, and projects. Models Professionalism: Works a full professional day and has a visible presence during school, as well as school and district sponsored community events. Shares information with central office administrators, ensuring districtwide engagement with school-based events. Performs Assigned Duties: Completes all reports, records, and other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee. Content Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of Illinois School Code with regard to teacher evaluations Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations governing administration of personnel in the public school setting Knowledge of laws and legal standards pertaining to employee relations and human resource management Knowledge of: elementary curriculum, instructional and assessment practices, including multilingual education restorative practices, including social-emotional learning and classroom management strategies; child development, brain development, and best practices in education; Special education programming: data collection, identification process, ability to lead special education meetings. curriculum development; safety practices and procedures; conflict resolution; and de-escalation techniques

Ability to be available to support the district beyond the regular work day Candidate Qualifications:

Appropriate Illinois Administrative Licensure Professional Educator License (PEL) with a General Administrative or Principal endorsement, required Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's degree in Education or a related field, required 5 + years of classroom teaching experience at the elementary school level, required ISBE qualified teacher evaluator, preferred Previous experience in the management of extra curricular and/or athletic activities preferred.

Physical Requirements:

This position requires the performance of light work, which requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently to move objects. The position includes close visual acuity, frequent talking, hearing, walking, and standing, occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling, and significant fine finger dexterity. The job is performed in non-hazardous environments and a clean atmosphere. The position requires indoor and outdoor supervision during varying temperatures and climatic conditions.
