Summary/Objective The Driver works cooperatively with the Supervisor of Transportation, the Transportation Dispatcher, as well as principals, teachers, instructional assistants and other drivers in all matters related to the transportation of school students.

The Van Driver has the responsibility for driving his/her bus as safely and efficiently as possible, and to perform all duties related to driving the vehicle as listed below.

Essential Functions:

Knows and obeys all traffic laws; always maintains a valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License. Observes all mandatory safety regulations for school vans. Maps out the most efficient route for each student on the run Maintains discipline when students are on the bus. Reports undisciplined students to the proper authorities. Checks van before and after each operation for mechanical defects. Installs car seats and assists children in and out of the van and their securements Notifies the proper authority in case of mechanical failure. Discharges students only at authorized stops. Transports only authorized students Reports all accidents and completes required reports. Enforces regulations against smoking and eating on the van. Knows and follows policies as stated in the driver’s handbook. Assists, when called upon, with any emergency During non-driving hours, performs other maintenance tasks as may be required to keep the van clean and fueled. Attends all required training as assigned by the Supervisor of Transportation. Immediately notifies Human Resources and Supervisor of any traffic violations incurred while employed.

Supervisory Responsibility:

This job has no direct supervisory responsibilities the incumbent must possess the managerial skills necessary to train drivers, interact with staff, parents and outside contractors.

To successfully perform this position, a person must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Motor Vehicle Report clear of violations (per the recommended guidelines and at the discretion of the Bucks IU)

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands and arms, and to talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to sit, and occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch or lift, and reach with hands and arms. Physically able to install/operate equipment needed for assigned route. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must have the ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee will be subject to outside environmental conditions with moderate noise level. Visual acuity with or without vision aids, ability to distinguish colors. Be free of impairment of the use of a foot, leg, hand, finger, or an arm, or other structural defects of limitations likely to interfere with the ability to safely control of vehicle. Depressing fuel and brake pedal with right foot and leg requiring 70 psi. Steps to enter and exit vehicles, step down 3.5 feet to exit emergency door.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

This is a part-time position. Days and hours of work vary but are Monday through Friday. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
