Background

NYCSBUS (New York City School Bus Umbrella Services) is a not-for-profit corporation that provides school bus transportation services to New York City public and private school students, the majority of whom have special needs and Individualized Educational Programs.

We operate 800 school bus routes with a staff of approximately 1,800 people across six locations, supported by a budget of $190 million.

Job Summary:

NYCSBUS is the country’s premier school bus fleet operator and is leading national efforts to electrify our fleet of 900+ yellow school buses.

The EV Program Manager is responsible for leading the organization's electric vehicle transition and managing the charging infrastructure program lifecycle. This individual will oversee grant acquisition, procurement, implementation, operational integration, and strategic development, including smart charging initiatives. The EV Program Manager will collaborate closely with IT, operational teams, and external vendors to ensure program success and optimize electrical operations. We are seeking a strategic and results-driven EV Program Manager to lead our organization's transition to electric vehicles and optimize our charging infrastructure. Reporting directly to the CIO, this role involves managing the full lifecycle of our EV program, from securing funding and procuring assets to overseeing implementation, operational integration, and strategic improvements. The EV Program Manager will drive initiatives to enhance electrical operations, build smart charging capabilities, and champion electrification efforts internally and potentially externally. This position requires a blend of program management expertise, technical understanding of EV technology, strong vendor coordination skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively across departments, particularly with IT.

Primary Responsibilities

Manage the Electrification of NYCSBUS Depots: This will involve not only our general electrification project but specific work to install vehicle to grid charging at one depot, vehicle-to-building charging, at another, a battery electric storage system at a third depot and a smart meter installation at a fourth. Integrate EVs Into Our Operations: As NYCSBUS is transitioned internal combustion engines to electric powertrains and chargers, the EV program manager will lead changes our processes around purchasing and, commissioning vehicles, operating the fleet procedures, and maintenance. Establish standard operating procedures and training programs for NYCSBUS staff in the operation and maintenance of electric buses Launch Charge Management system. Contribute to NYCSBUS’s view on on which vehicle electrification products and procedures are state-of-the art, guide our purchasing. Most broadly help define our vision and financing strategy for an electric bus company by working on our state- and city- wide electric bus advocacy work. Other Responsibilities

Oversee the documentation of issues, maintenance, configurations, and troubleshooting steps for EVs, chargers, and associated electrical equipment within the asset management system. Facilitate cross-training initiatives to build EV/EVSE knowledge within relevant teams. Act as a point of contact for complex charging issues, troubleshoot problems, and ensure timely resolution, escalating to Level 2 support (internal IT or external vendors) when necessary. Skills

Strong understanding of electric vehicle and EVSE technology, including installation, operation, and maintenance principles. Familiarity with smart charging concepts and software (experience with ChargePilot is highly desirable). Experience working with IT/technical teams on system integration, monitoring, or support. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting capabilities. Experience with asset management systems and technical documentation. (Experience with Fleetio and Geotab is desirable.) Excellent communication (written and verbal) and presentation skills. Ability to manage complex projects to deliver the change we want Ability to develop standard operating procedures and design processes required to scale Ability to apply for and manage complex grants procurements Ability to work with subcontractors, advocates, regulators, landlords and utilities Ability to effectively communicate complexity with an emphasis on kindness and professionalism

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business, Information Technology, Environmental Science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. Project Management certification (PMP, ITIL) desired but not required. Valid driver's license required to travel between depots Work Environment

This role will be based in our Greenpoint office location in 297 Norman Avenue It is on-site 5 days a week and involves office-based work with regular coordination meetings and potential site visits for project oversight within New York State. Ability to travel to other NYCSBUS depots if needed Must be able to work safely in conditions where noise, moving machinery, exposure to dust, fumes and/or gas may be present. May be assigned shifts that fall outside of normally scheduled hours. During busy seasons such as the opening of the fall and summer school season staff may be required to work longer than normally scheduled hours and might be assigned to depots other than the one they were hired for.
