School Nurse Manager
is responsible for coordinating, collaborating, planning for, and, in most cases, providing direct services to ensure compliance for the school-wide health program, as defined by the Pennsylvania School Code. The goals of this position are to maintain and/or improve the health status of students, thus enabling them to profit fully from their educational experiences, and to promote optimum health status and lifestyles for all students through the joint efforts of the home, school, and community. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide oversight and supervision of the Davidson School medical administration with tasks including but not limited to those responsibilities listed below: Perform medical interventions and medication management as per Pennsylvania Department of Health (PDH) regulations
Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and safe crisis intervention using agency-trained protocols and in accordance with Pennsylvania Department of Health (PDH) regulations
Develop and maintain a comprehensive school health services program for students, following PDOH and Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) regulations Assist school administrators in planning and organizing the school health program
Consult school administrators to establish, review and revise policies and procedures for a comprehensive school health program
Provide up-to-date information for use of school personnel on such subjects as the growth and development pattern of children, first aid practice, accident prevention, communicable disease regulations and assist in evaluating the content material used for health teaching, and offer assistance in providing sources of information
Utilize data collected to help plan and evaluate the school health program
Ensure that reports required by the school districts, PDH and PDE are properly prepared and submitted
Provide direct services to students, using standard protocols to provide care to the school community in accordance with current medical practice and nursing standards of care, relevant statutes, and regulations Perform and/or oversee mandated screenings and complete referrals and follow-up, where applicable
Manage and control acute and chronic disease. Carry out policies and procedures for the control of communicable diseases in collaboration with the PA Department of Health (PDH)
Provide first aid for illness or injury to students and document nursing assessment, diagnosis, and treatment
Establish health care plans for students with special health care needs and update them, as needed
Review and monitor student immunization status. Make appropriate referrals to update immunizations, when indicated
Maintain comprehensive health records on each child and records of school nursing services
Assist in interpreting the health needs of individual children to parents and teachers and assist families in utilizing community resources for improving the health of their children
Administer medications and perform procedures according to physician orders. Ensure physician orders for individual student medications and/or treatments comply with requirements for administration
Inform teachers of health conditions of pupils which may affect behavior, appearance or scholastic performance
Facilitate an organized system of coordinated care for students Collaborate with agencies within and outside the school community to ensure continuity of service and care of students, including working with private physicians and dentists to coordinate private medical and dental examinations with the school program
Identify high-risk children and refer to services needed, including students presenting signs of child abuse
Actively participate in Individual Education Program (IEP) meetings for exceptional students with medical or developmental disabilities, and /or provide information to these teams as required
Promote a safe and healthy school environment Plan with school administrative, maintenance, and sanitation personnel for the environmental needs of the school group, and advise school officials of environmental adjustment necessary to meet the needs of physically challenged individuals
Plan for first aid services and instruct personnel responsible for administering first aid
Direct health services staff to facilitate the school health program
Apply appropriate nursing theory and evidence-based practice as the basis for decision-making in the school setting. Contribute to the body of Davidson School Nurse Manager knowledge through participation in needs assessments and/or research
Serve as resource person to facilitate learning of positive health and wellness behaviors for students and staff
Arrange for or teach in-service programs for school personnel in first aid, emergency care procedures and current health issues
Promote good safety practices, both within and outside of school buildings. Serve as a member of Safe School Committee(s)
Provide supervision of assigned staff in the areas including, but not limited to, recruitment, selection, leadership, coaching, training, performance management, promotion, discipline and termination
Works with, understands, and complies with terms and conditions of collective bargaining agreements (CBA) within a unionized environment with tasks including but not limited to adherence to scheduling procedures, processing transfers and promotions, administering disciplinary actions, adjudicating grievances, where appropriate, etc.
Perform other duties as required and as needed EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIREMENTS: Current PA Registered Nurse License
Current Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) certification in school nursing
Two (2) years of supervisory experience
Previous experience working within and managing a unionized workforce preferred
Minimum two (2) years background/experience in pediatric nursing, school nursing, community health nursing, critical care nursing, medical-surgical nursing and/or emergency room nursing preferred
Must be able to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), medication administration, and safe crisis intervention using agency-trained protocols and in accordance with Pennsylvania Department of Health (PDH) regulations
Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification
Thorough knowledge of current child abuse laws, policies and procedures
Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage and prioritize multiple, often competing, priorities
Demonstrated strong attention to detail
Demonstrated strong time management and organizational skills
Demonstrated excellent judgment with the ability to independently solve problems and make decisions with little or no need for direct supervision
Demonstrated ability to anticipate future needed changes or identify problem areas and take effective actions
Experience using/knowledge of Electronic Health Record (EHR) / Electronic Medical Record (EMR) preferred
Must possess excellent customer interaction, collaboration, presentation, and written and verbal communication skills Demonstrated intermediate experience with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint; and report-writer experience preferred
Must possess a current, valid driver's license in state of residence, have a minimum of two (2) years of driving experience within the United States, and have an acceptable driving record.
