The Penn State College of Medicine, The Cheng/Ang Lab at Jake Gittlen Laboratories for Cancer Research in Hershey, PA, is seeking a Web Designer. The successful candidate will collaborate to create user-friendly, scientifically valuable, attractive, and polished web-based resources for science and society. The lab maintains two atlases: bio-atlas.psu.edu and daphnia.io. Initially, the person will work with the atlases' coordinators and IT department to update the Bio-atlas website, implement new features, ensure high performance, and maintain all technical aspects. Qualifications include hands-on experience in developing and maintaining scientific websites, proficiency with core web technologies such as JavaScript (jQuery), CSS, HTML/HTML5, Python, Django, SQL, Apache, OpenSeaDragon, PHP, and Drupal modules. A solid understanding of databases, version control, troubleshooting, and collaboration tools like Jira, GitLab, Slack, and Teams is essential. Basic Linux admin skills, accessibility, and assistive technology knowledge are advantageous. Additional knowledge in bioinformatics and genomic analysis (SNP genotyping, whole genome sequencing, transcriptomics) is a plus. Responsibilities include documenting workflows, training staff, assisting in manuscripts and proposals, and collaborating with research staff. The candidate must communicate daily with PIs and colleagues, work independently and in teams, and complete tasks timely. Qualifications:
Minimum 2+ years related experience Associate's Degree or higher; Bachelor of Science preferred Equivalent education and experience acceptable This is a limited-term position for one year, with potential renewal, pending successful background checks and clearances (Pennsylvania State Police, Child Abuse, FBI).
