NURSING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SPECIALIST JOB SUMMARY

The Nursing Professional Development Specialist (NPDS) demonstrates competency in Nursing Education, as well as current expert knowledge and skills in pediatric nursing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF POSITION

Demonstrates competency for the patient population serviced, and facilitates the delivery of quality patient care. Provides state-of-the-art training and education based on best practices. Functions according to the Nursing Plan for Care and Services as educator, consultant, researcher, role model and change agent. Develops, implements, and evaluates educational programs. Coordinates and facilitates monthly Nursing Orientation. Coordinates and facilitates the Nursing Residency Program. Collaborates with colleagues to maintain the accuracy of all Nursing Policies and Procedures through Lippincott. Tracks and trends data and prepares written reports. Incorporates simulation technology into educational programs. Collaborates with the Director of Hospital Education and Organization Development to integrate and administer grant funded programs. Serves as consultant on nursing competencies, initiate and participate in performance improvement activities. Coach Nursing staff in pursuing advancement on the Clinical Ladder.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Educational Requirements: Master of Science Degree in Nursing from a National League for Nursing Accredited School of Nursing Preferred.

Licensure, Certification and Registration: Current and unrestricted license to practice in the State of Maryland. Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS) trained within six months. Certification in Professional Development preferred.

Work Orientation and Experience: A minimum of 5 years Pediatric Nursing with Education experience. Experience with educational curriculum development, program coordination, or staff development required. Pediatric experience required and pediatric specialty experience preferred. Experience with simulation learning preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Solid knowledge base in ANA Standards of Nursing Care & Practice, the ANA Code of Ethics, Standards of Practice for Nursing Professional Development, the Nurse Practice Act, the Joint Commission Standards. Interpersonal skills necessary to interact and communicate effectively and with leadership, peers, staff, and members of the health care team. Solid knowledge base in Principles of Evidenced Based Practice. Excellent clinical assessment skills primarily for population served. Excellent customer service skills. Organized with multi-tasking ability Competent in the performance improvement process. Time management skills. Sound understanding of adult learning principles. Knowledge and ability to track and trend data and evaluate programs. Computer literate with knowledge of applicable software programs. Basic understanding of grant funded programs. Excellent coaching and mentoring skills. Detail oriented. Skilled in developing Power Point presentations. Ability to walk, run, stand, sit, reach, stoop, bend, rush, pull, demonstrate manual dexterity and mobility and has visual and auditory ability to do this job.

INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Promotes collegial relationship with the Education Specialist and Nurse Preceptors, and works collaboratively with Nursing Leadership and supportively as a role model for nursing staff.

TOOLS/EQUIPMENT USED

Computers and software, Xerox, Fax, Simulation Manikin and Tools, Audiovisual Equipment. Patient care equipment.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT/WORKING CONDITIONS

Regular or continuous risk of exposure to body fluids, infectious waste or blood borne diseases requiring the use of personal protective equipment and adherence to established protocol. Occasionally subjected to irregular hours. Occasional stress due to emergency situations or multiple demands. This job description identifies the general nature and level of work to be performed.
