About the role:
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced GIS and Hydrographic Scientist to lead our data science initiatives. The ideal candidate will be an expert in geospatial data management and analysis, with a specific focus on hydrographic and oceanographic applications. This role is responsible for architecting the entire lifecycle of our scientific data, from collection and processing to long-term preservation and public dissemination. You will develop and implement innovative strategies, policies, and technological solutions to resolve complex data challenges and support critical scientific missions.
Key Responsibilities: Hydrographic Data Strategy:
Develop and direct novel strategies for managing the hydrographic data lifecycle, including data creation, processing, quality control, storage, and deletion, with a particular focus on cloud-based environments. Scientific Modeling & Analysis:
Utilize advanced analytical techniques, including scientific modeling, AI, and Machine Learning, to process and interpret complex hydrographic, oceanographic, and geospatial datasets. Technology and Infrastructure:
Advise on the technology infrastructure required to support robust data management and dissemination. Develop innovative solutions and automate workflows using modern coding/scripting languages and application development practices. GIS and Metadata Management:
Formulate, execute, and oversee GIS data and metadata management policies. Ensure all scientific and geospatial data products adhere to the highest standards for quality, discoverability, and accessibility. Standards and Compliance:
Serve as the subject matter expert on metadata standards (e.g., ISO 19115, FGDC). Interpret and implement guidance to ensure all created metadata is robust, compliant, and sufficient for public use. Collaboration and Coordination:
Coordinate with internal teams and external agency GIS (Geographic Information System) communities on data management planning, documentation, and joint projects to ensure seamless data integration and support. Problem Resolution:
Develop and implement best business practices to identify and resolve complex data management challenges, ensuring the integrity and usability of scientific data assets. Qualifications:
Education:
A degree in a relevant field such as Marine Science, Oceanography, Hydrography, GIS, Remote Sensing, Data Science, Engineering, Biology, or Computer Science. Experience & Skills:
Directly related professional experience in managing and analyzing large-scale geospatial datasets, particularly hydrographic or oceanographic data (e.g., bathymetry, side-scan sonar, tidal data, water column data). Expert-level knowledge of GIS principles and software (e.g., Esri ArcGIS Suite, QGIS). Demonstrated experience in formulating and implementing data management policies and metadata standards. Proficiency in coding/scripting for automation and data analysis (e.g., Python, R). Experience with cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and their application to geospatial data workflows. Familiarity with scientific modeling, data processing, and application development is highly desirable. Excellent communication skills with the ability to advise on technical strategies and coordinate effectively across multiple teams and agencies.
