An AS400 Synon DBA is responsible for maintaining, securing, and optimizing databases on the IBM iSeries platform, particularly those built or supported by Synon (CA 2E) applications.
They ensure the integrity, security, and performance of these crucial business data stores.
Responsibilities: Database Administration: Setup, configure, and maintain the DB2 database on iSeries. Monitor database performance and perform tuning for optimal efficiency. Implement and manage database security measures, including user access and permissions. Perform regular backups and recovery processes. Manage SQL Triggers and journal maintenance. Provide technical support for database-related issues. Synon Application Support:
Analyze, design, and program on iSeries systems, particularly for applications developed in Synon (CA 2E). Troubleshoot and debug Synon applications and programs. Enhance and support existing Synon applications. Integrate Synon applications with other iSeries components like RPG, CL, and DB2/400. System Administration:
Assist in installation, configuration, and maintenance of iSeries hardware and operating system software. Manage system resources and ensure optimal utilization. Coordinate software installation, upgrades, and patches. Participate in capacity planning, disaster recovery, and high availability planning. Collaboration and Documentation:
Collaborate with developers, IT teams, and business stakeholders to understand requirements and provide technical support. Develop and maintain documentation for system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting. Participate in project teams and provide updates to management.
Technical Skills:
Strong knowledge of IBM iSeries (AS/400) administration and troubleshooting. Experience with DB2 database administration, including performance tuning and optimization. Strong in Synon Proficiency in SQL and scripting languages. Experience with Synon (CA 2E) development toolset. Knowledge of related programming languages like RPG, CL, and COBOL is beneficial. Familiarity with data backup and recovery strategies and best practices. Understanding of database architecture and data modeling. Experience with specific tools like Data Mirror, Tivoli, Mimix, or others as needed. Problem Solving and Communication:
Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills to identify and resolve technical issues. Strong communication and collaboration skills to interact with various stakeholders. Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
