Content Strategist
The Houston Chronicle is seeking a content strategist to help our newsroom grow its reach and impact through smart, intentional audience plans. This person will work closely with content teams to develop and execute strategies that promote our journalism across platforms and attract new readers. The ideal candidate brings an understanding of audience behavior and digital platforms, and a desire to help our journalism meet people where they are.
This role is part of the audience team and serves as a key connector between audience goals and content execution. The content strategist will help shape promotion plans, track performance, and give actionable feedback to ensure stories are seen, shared, and remembered.
Key responsibilities: Collaborate with editors and reporters to create audience plans for high-impact stories, including promotion strategies across search, social, homepage, newsletters and more Provide content teams with feedback and coaching based on performance metrics, helping them understand what's resonating with readers and why Partner with the social and homepage teams to help shape distribution tactics that drive engagement and reach Track and interpret analytics using tools like Google Analytics, Parse.ly and Chartbeat, and distill insights into clear, actionable takeaways Help identify trends, audience needs, and platform opportunities to inform coverage and promotion Support the newsroom with resources, training and updates on evolving audience habits and platform shifts Contribute to broader audience initiatives that support growth goals, in collaboration with other strategists, editors and product teams We're looking for someone who:
Has 2-4 years of experience in audience growth, content strategy, digital media, or a related field Understands how readers discover and engage with news on different platforms, including search and social Is fluent in using audience data to inform decisions and offer constructive feedback Communicates clearly and diplomatically, with the ability to guide, coach and collaborate across teams Thrives in a fast-paced, evolving news environment and brings curiosity and creativity to their work Is organized, solutions-oriented, and comfortable balancing multiple priorities at once Success is measured by:
Growth in subscribers and engagement across priority platforms Strong collaboration with content teams, leading to more intentional and successful story promotion Increased adoption of audience-forward practices in coverage planning and execution Clear, consistent communication of audience insights that influence newsroom strategy
