Nature and Scope of Job
:
The Database (DB) Specialist leads efforts related to information systems; initiates system tasks, identifies failures and abnormalities, initiates corrective action, and recommends and controls system recoveries to reestablish effective operations. The DB Specialist understands, directs, and coordinates activities of internal and external client/server systems. The DB Specialist must be able to maintain an organized approach to a constantly changing work load and dynamic environment. This person is responsible for developing programs and queries for staff and applications of the Information Systems. The DB Specialist will train staff as necessary or seek consultation from an appropriate vendor. They will exhibit a high level of database knowledge and skill with the ability to adapt with changing programs and IT needs. This employee must be able to concentrate on complex tasks for extended periods of time.
It is expected that this individual will accomplish assigned duties in an efficient, effective, and competent manner and strive for improvement in all work performed. Additionally, this individual must understand comprehensive roll of the district and cooperate and work harmoniously with district staff, students, guardians, and the community.
Job Functions
Essential Functions:
1. Work closely with district staff members and colleagues to evaluate, troubleshoot, develop programs, and document the Information System.
2. Design, direct, and conduct the district's compliance with reporting related to state/federal reports, use of Enterprise Reporting, data mining, and data transfer services such as SIF.
3. Perform Database Specialist functions including coordinating system security, user access, audit configuration, and usage logs.
4. Coordinate the implementation and maintenance of Information Systems software by developing partnerships with staff members, colleagues, vendors, and technical resources.
5. Design procedures for the implementation and usage of the test environment.
6. Maintain clean data in the information system by training and monitoring data entry by district staff.
7. Maintain accurate documentation regarding database and application functions, operating procedures, and the disseminations of documentation to users.
8. Responsible for the security functionality of hardware and software within the student information system by maintaining staff accounts and security.
9. Lead the design, installation, testing, and implementation of solutions needed for access, applications, and security issues related to information system.
10. Assist in assigned activities related to student enrollment procedures, pre-enrollments, student attendance categories, transcripts, and/or program components including but not limited to compliance, critical timeliness, student dropouts, and graduation rates for the purpose of ensuring compliance with legal and/or administrative requirements.
11. Assist with the problem solving and troubleshooting activities for the production events related to information systems.
12. Assist in the proactive monitoring of systems reliability and of system hardware/software. Correct deficiencies through own efforts or outside support services as needed.
13. Coordinate and provide training activities with other departments and produce necessary documentation.
14. Provide support via Help Desk to teachers, administrators, secretaries, registrars, and other staff.
15. Coordinate the input of data from outside vendors (pictures, state test scores, etc.) into the SIS.
16. Attend and participate in meetings, conferences, and seminars to be informed of new developments in managing information systems, especially in relation to state regulations governing information and other state requirements.
17. Be a resource for implementations and training for master scheduling, new school/programs, corrections to master schedules, and importing new courses.
18. Provides technical/application training for the Information Systems. Assists in the planning/enhancements for user training. Helps users understand and fully utilize the capabilities of the system.
Other Functions:
1. Performs other related duties as assigned.
2. Travel to local and outlying schools.

Knowledge, Skills and Mental Ability:
• Knowledge of database functions and structures.
• Knowledge of information systems.
• Knowledge of applications used in tandem with information system applications.
• Knowledge of MAC OS X and Windows.
• Knowledge of Office Productivity tools.
• Knowledge of Help Desk support software.
• Knowledge of federal and state data requirements.
• Ability to develop plans to manage information systems and related applications.
• Ability to speak clearly and communicate positively.
• Ability to write clearly and concisely.
• Ability to think critically and creatively.
• Ability to work with people of various personality types.
• Possess sound emotional judgment.
Minimum Requirements
(Education, License, Certification, Experience or Formal Training) :
1. High School Diploma
2. Computer classes at the High School or College Level
3. Experience working directly with information systems and in submitting district-level state reports
4. Experience in direct user support
5. Competence in administrative software and database systems support and management/setup/maintenance/interfacing to include student records and other database systems.
6. Experience working with multiple entities and organizations to complete tasks and reports.

Physical Demands:
1. Lower body strength to stand and walk throughout the work day.
