Job Description
The CDC seeks a highly motivated
Epidemiologist/Bioinformatician/Data Architect
to support global surveillance and capacity-building initiatives focused on respiratory viruses. This position will serve as a technical liaison between the CDC and Ministries of Health in South and Central America, as well as key international partners. The successful candidate will provide scientific and strategic expertise across epidemiologic, bioinformatics, and data architecture domains to strengthen surveillance systems and inform global public health decision-making.

Estimated Starting Salary Range for
Epidemiologist / Bioinformatician / Data Architect : Pay commensurate with experience.

Epidemiologist / Bioinformatician / Data Architect Responsibilities Include: Actively participate in daily operations including internal meetings, conference
calls, and partner engagements to further global health surveillance goals. Serve as a subject matter expert in respiratory viral surveillance, contributing to both research and non-research projects focused on global health threats. Act as the primary point-of-contact for CDC's collaboration with Ministries of Health (MOHs) in South and Central America, with additional support to other regions as needed. Liaise with external partners (e.g., UCSF, TEPHINET, PAHO) and provide technical support for proposal development, implementation planning, data analysis, and manuscript preparation. Coordinate with U.S. Government (USG) partners, including embassy personnel and CDC country and regional offices, to support bilateral and multilateral respiratory surveillance activities. Develop and refine protocols, SOPs, and guidance documents for sentinel, universal, and event-based surveillance of respiratory viruses. Provide strategic laboratory guidance for field surveillance operations and data collection related to influenza, RSV, and other respiratory pathogens. Coordinate and streamline activities across global teams focused on the Latin America and Caribbean region. Design, implement, and support training programs on respiratory surveillance methods, RSV burden estimation, and emergency response protocols. Contribute to global public health emergency responses, both domestic and international, in alignment with CDC's emergency operations. Provide routine updates, technical reports, and strategic insights to leadership. Ensure all communications and stakeholder interactions are handled in a professional, diplomatic, and culturally competent manner. Perform other duties as assigned to support CDC mission. Travel Requirement: 25-30% (international and domestic) to provide in-country technical support, attend workshops, and participate in training programs. Performs other job-related duties as assigned Epidemiologist / Bioinformatician / Data Architect Experience, Education, Skills, Abilities requested:
Master's or Ph.D. in
Epidemiology, Bioinformatics, Public Health, Data Science , or a related field. 7-10+ years
of relevant experience in global health surveillance, data architecture, or genomic epidemiology. Demonstrated experience in
international health programs , particularly working with
Ministries of Health
or global implementing partners. Expertise in
respiratory virus surveillance
systems and methodologies (e.g., influenza, RSV, SARS-CoV-2). Proficiency in data management and analysis tools such as
R, Python, SQL , or
bioinformatics platforms . Strong understanding of
sentinel, universal, and event-based surveillance frameworks . Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to present complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences. Demonstrated experience with
scientific writing , including publications and surveillance reports. Proven ability to work collaboratively and diplomatically with international partners and multidisciplinary teams. Ability to travel internationally up to
30% of the time . Preferred Qualifications:
Fluency or working proficiency in
Spanish
or
Portuguese . Experience with
CDC ,
PAHO ,
WHO , or similar international public health agencies. Familiarity with
RSV burden estimation methodologies
and
phylodynamic or spatial epidemiologic analysis .
