Data Scientist

About the Role We're not just looking for a model builder-we're looking for a data scientist who can turn raw energy data into measurable impact. At Cenergistic, you'll be at the forefront of a mission-driven effort to reduce utility waste across thousands of buildings in K-12 schools, universities, hospitals, and municipalities.

You'll dive into a vast sea of energy, building, weather, and behavioral data to discover patterns, optimize consumption, and build models that deliver insight-not just dashboards. This is a chance to craft our next generation of in-house models, work side-by-side with LLMs like ChatGPT and Claude to automate analysis and embed intelligence directly into our product workflows.

This isn't an R&D sandbox. Your models will be in production and used to change behavior.

What You'll Do: Own the Model Lifecycle • Build, validate, and deploy models for cost anomaly detection, savings prediction, baseline normalization, and building performance classification • Develop methods to provide "apples-to-apples" comparisons of energy use, even across buildings with different meters, systems, and conditions • Engineer proprietary scoring models to identify which buildings and campuses need attention first-be the brain behind our prioritization engine Turn Data into Insight (Fast) • Explore and analyze structured and unstructured datasets across weather, occupancy, IoT, utility bills, and interval data • Work closely with domain experts to understand how building systems behave and convert that knowledge into real-time or scheduled analytics • Build simulations and "what-if" models that allow our users to test strategies before they're deployed Power Our Work with LLMs • Engineer tools and workflows that feed context-rich summaries to LLMs (like Claude and ChatGPT) to assist energy specialists, engineers, and clients • Help create a feedback loop between structured models and generative reasoning-so both get smarter over time Operationalize Your Intelligence • Work side-by-side with our Data Engineers and Software Developers to embed insights directly into Measure, GreenX, and the Optimize Platform • Automate reports, alerts, and visualizations that surface the "why" behind energy trends-not just the "what"

What We're Looking For • 3+ years' experience building and deploying models in a production environment • Deep fluency in Python, including key libraries like pandas, scikit-learn, statsmodels, and prophet • Strong understanding of statistical modeling, time series analysis, forecasting, and causal inference • Solid SQL skills and experience working with large-scale relational datasets • Experience working with energy or sensor data-or strong curiosity to learn quickly • Proven ability to communicate insights clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences Desired Experience • Familiarity with LLMs and experience engineering prompts or retrieval systems for domain-specific analysis • Experience integrating with building automation systems (BAS), IoT sensor streams, or SCADA-like infrastructure • Knowledge of energy markets, M&V protocols (e.g. IPMVP), and utility billing structures • Experience with tools like Power BI, Tableau, or plotly/dash for interactive insight delivery • Exposure to cloud-based AI/ML workflows using AWS, Azure, or GCP Why This Role Matters Our buildings consume billions of kWh, therms, and gallons. Your models and insights will drive behavior that saves money, reduces emissions, and improves comfort for the people in them. You'll be a key architect of the analytics strategy that enables us to scale AI across our platform-and empower every Energy Specialist and Engineer to act faster and smarter.
