Job Summary:

The Manager of Biomedical Engineering is responsible for the leadership and operational oversight of the hospital's biomedical engineering department. This role ensures the safe, effective, and regulatory-compliant operation of all medical equipment and systems. The manager provides strategic planning, staff supervision, and technical expertise to support high-quality patient care across the facility.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership & Strategy:

Lead, mentor, and supervise a team of Biomedical Equipment Technicians (BMETs) and Clinical Engineers.

Develop and implement departmental goals, policies, and procedures in alignment with hospital objectives.

Manage staffing schedules, performance evaluations, and professional development initiatives.

Operations & Compliance:

Oversee the preventive maintenance, testing, calibration, and repair of all medical devices.

Ensure compliance with all regulatory and accrediting bodies (e.g., The Joint Commission, CMS, NFPA, FDA).

Monitor vendor contracts, service level agreements (SLAs), and coordinate third-party services.

Technology Management:

Evaluate and recommend new medical technologies and equipment purchases.

Support equipment lifecycle management including selection, installation, and replacement planning.

Participate in capital planning and equipment budgeting processes.

Risk & Safety:

Lead hospital-wide initiatives related to equipment safety, user education, and emergency response readiness.

Investigate equipment-related incidents and ensure prompt resolution of safety issues.

Maintain documentation and reporting in compliance with hospital policies and regulatory standards.

Collaboration & Communication:

Serve as liaison between clinical departments, IT, Facilities, and vendors.

Provide guidance and technical expertise to clinical staff on the appropriate use and operation of medical equipment.

Present reports, dashboards, and updates to hospital leadership.

Qualifications:

Education & Certification:

Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Clinical Engineering, or related field required.

Master's degree or MBA preferred.

CBET (Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician), CHTM (Certified Healthcare Technology Manager), or equivalent certification strongly preferred.

Experience:

Minimum of 5-7 years of progressively responsible experience in biomedical engineering, including at least 2 years in a leadership role.

Extensive experience in a hospital or large healthcare system is required.

Skills:

Deep knowledge of clinical equipment systems, standards, and best practices.

Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Proficiency in CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems).

Familiarity with hospital regulatory requirements and risk management practices.

Ability to manage budgets, analyze data, and drive continuous improvement initiatives.

Working Conditions:

On-site work in patient care areas, equipment rooms, and clinical spaces.

May require occasional travel between multiple hospital sites.

Availability for on-call support or emergency response situations.
