Cardiac Rhythm Management (CRM) Software develops the next generation medical technologies that alleviate pain, restore health and extend life for millions of patients across the world. We are seeking a Principal Observability Engineer to lead the design, automation, and support of our observability stack across Elastic Cloud, Dynatrace, Prometheus, and AWS. This role is a technical leadership position responsible for setting the strategic direction of observability, mentoring a growing team of engineers, and driving reliability through actionable insights into our systems and applications. This position is in Mounds View, MN, within the Cardiac Rhythm Management (CRM) unit. At Medtronic, we bring bold ideas forward with speed and decisiveness to put patients first in everything we do. This role will require less than 10% of travel to enhance collaboration and ensure successful completion of projects. Responsibilities include: Own the architecture, implementation, and lifecycle management of the observability platform (Elastic Cloud, Dynatrace, Prometheus, & more). Lead efforts to improve logging, monitoring, metrics collection, distributed tracing, and alerting across cloud-native applications. Collaborate with engineering, security, and Architecture teams to define SLIs/SLOs and implement robust observability standards. Develop and maintain monitoring & observability as a service (Terraform) to automate platform deployment and configuration. Evangelize for all observability-related initiatives and mentor junior engineers in best practices. Define and enforce data retention, access control, and multi-tenant observability strategies for Elastic and Prometheus. Integrate observability tools into CI/CD pipelines to enable proactive detection and incident response. Optimize cost, performance, and scalability of observability services within AWS. Participate in on-call rotations and post-incident reviews, driving reliability improvements across the platform. Specialized knowledge required includes: Deep expertise in managing Elastic Cloud (Kibana, Beats, Logstash, Index Lifecycle Policies). Hands-on experience with Dynatrace and Prometheus monitoring stacks, including exporter management and custom dashboards. Strong experience with AWS services (EC2, EKS, S3, IAM, etc.) and Streaming framework (Kafka etc.) Proficiency in Terraform and GitOps practices for infrastructure automation. Solid understanding of distributed systems, containers (Docker), Kubernetes, and microservices observability patterns. Proven leadership and mentorship experience; ability to lead cross-functional projects and develop junior team members. Strong scripting skills (Python, Bash, or similar) for automation and integration. Excellent communication and documentation skills. Qualifications: Must Have - Minimum Requirements:

To be considered for this role, please be sure the minimum requirements are evident on your resume. Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related technical field. Minimum of 7 years of experience SRE, observability, platform engineering, or related fields, or advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years of technical experience. Nice to Have: Experience with OpenTelemetry or other open standards for observability. Familiarity with cost optimization strategies in observability tooling. Exposure to compliance frameworks (HIPAA, ISO 27001) in observability contexts. Medtronic offers a competitive salary and flexible benefits package. PR) locations (USD): $155,200.00 - $232,800.00. This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP). The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location.
