The Opportunity:
Are you energized by solving complex technical puzzles in large-scale systems? We're looking for a highly skilled Sr. Backend Engineer for our API team who excels at designing, building, and stabilizing intricate backend services. You'll use your deep PHP/Laravel 10+ and AWS knowledge to develop and maintain critical APIs within an environment featuring both modern and legacy components. This role requires exceptional debugging skills, a focus on resilience, and the ability to navigate and improve complex, interconnected systems while leveraging modern tools like AI assistants.
What You'll Do: • Develop Resilient APIs: Design, build, and maintain scalable and fault-tolerant RESTful APIs using PHP/Laravel on AWS. • Expert-Level Debugging: Diagnose and resolve complex, multi-system issues, tracing problems through APIs, Lambdas, databases, and caches, even in unstable environments. • System Optimization: Identify bottlenecks and implement improvements for performance, scalability, and reliability across the API ecosystem. • Modernization Contribution: Help refactor legacy code and implement robust solutions within a complex, evolving architecture. • Quality & Testing: Write clean, testable code (PHPUnit essential) and advocate for comprehensive testing strategies to ensure stability. • Productivity Enhancement: Utilize AI-assisted development tools (Copilot, etc.) effectively to improve development speed and address complexity • Collaborate on Stability: Work closely with DevOps and other engineers to ensure smooth deployments, effective monitoring (Datadog), and infrastructure health. • Technical Communication: Clearly document and communicate technical solutions and investigation findings. • On-Call Support: Participate in the support rotation for critical API systems.
What You Bring: • Senior Engineering Track Record: 5+ years delivering and maintaining complex backend systems. • PHP/Laravel Expertise: Deep practical knowledge of PHP and Laravel (10+ highly desired). • AWS Proficiency: Solid experience with AWS services relevant to API development and deployment. • Master Troubleshooter: Proven, exceptional ability to debug complex, distributed systems and performance issues. • Resilience & Pragmatism: Ability to stay productive and find solutions amidst technical challenges, blockers, and environment instability. • API Design Skills: Strong understanding of RESTful services and designing for scale and reliability. • Database Knowledge: Expertise in MS SQL Server/PostgreSQL and caching techniques. • AI Tool Proficiency: Experience leveraging AI tools effectively within a development workflow. • Testing Commitment: Strong belief in and practice of thorough code testing (PHPUnit). • Collaborative & Communicative: Ability to work well within a team, share findings clearly, and manage dependencies.
Highly Desirable: • Experience migrating legacy PHP to Laravel. • Node.js, JavaScript, or TypeScript experience. • Queuing systems (Laravel Horizon, AWS SQS). • E-commerce platform familiarity. • OAuth/JWT implementation knowledge.
