Controls Engineer , responsible for having a knowledge base and understanding of the latest PLC, motion control, robotics and/or conveyor based systems, designs, programs, and programming techniques. This includes knowledge of the full range of Rockwell Automation PLCs, servo drives, motion controls, VFD's and other related component technology provided by Rockwell and other leading component suppliers. The
Controls Engineer
will be responsible for start to finish project execution that includes electrical design, programming, field installation, troubleshooting, and technical support.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Work independently with some oversight by higher-level Controls Engineers or Controls Engineering Manager. Accountable for project execution related to controls/electrical engineering. This includes meeting technical, schedule and budget objectives. Provide progressive and innovative electrical solutions to control requirements of the machines and/or systems. Work with the Controls Engineer team to develop and enhance programming, design, and documentation standards to improve the efficiency of the department. Work with Mechanical Engineers and formulate the electrical design concept and sequence of machine operation. The Controls Engineer is responsible for overall machine operation. This includes working with the Mechanical Engineer to assure that the machine includes all required sensors and electro-mechanical structures and mechanisms to allow optimal machine control and performance. Work with customers as required to refine customized control concept and to meet customer specification. Develop all PLC, HMI, Robot, Barcode, Machine Vision, Motion Control, Conveyor System, HMI programs and other related aspects to assure proper machine operation and performance based on the sequence of machine operation defined jointly with the Mechanical Engineer. Program automation and control systems involving PLC's, HMI's, operator interface, servo controllers, motion controls, programmable switches and all other electrical components required for the machine. Design and develop electrical drawing packages using the current electrical CAD software. This may require working with mechanical layout drawings showing system-wide wire runs and machine interconnectivity/ network runs. Prepare the electrical Bills of Materials for machine and document these Bills of Material within the current ERP system and Electrical Engineering CAD tools. Attend kickoff meetings with project team, capture necessary information and understand the requirements of the project. Assist in directing the Electrical/Mechanical Assembly Department as needed. Provide guidance to ensure that the machine/system is built in accordance with the applicable standards and customer requirements. Setup, test and debug the system and machines. Redline electrical drawings as required during initial build and field installation. Make sure all redlines are implemented and the final electrical drawings are re-printed and included in the drawing package. Work with customers to explain and document controls concept and design to adhere to the project scope and customer's specifications/expectations. Maintain knowledge of industry leading programming techniques and tools. Provide copies of schematics, Electrical Bill of Materials, and PLC Ladder Logic program listing to the Technical Writer for inclusion in the Operation and Maintenance Manual for each machine. Provide detailed records of all drawings and programs. Archive reference information on shipped machine files and programs. Provide technical support and assistance to other departments. Travel to customer's sites for system installation, technical support, or project site visits. Estimated travel up to 25%. POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
desired
(equivalent industry experience considered). 3-5 years of experience in programming and electrical design in related industry. Proven competency using Microsoft Office such as Word & Excel. Background in designing industrial electrical circuits including component sizing and selection. System integration and robotic programming experience a plus. Knowledge of current standards such as NFPA 79, RIA 15.06, UL508A preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, talk, or hear; uses hands to finger, handle, or touch objects or controls. On occasion, may be required to climb and work in high places, stoop, bend or reach above the shoulders. The incumbent must occasionally lift, push, or pull up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The position is an office-based position with potential visits to the manufacturing area. In the manufacturing area, employees may be exposed to moving mechanical parts and may occasionally be exposed to fumes and/or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but at times loud.
