Our clients include engineering teams in automotive, aerospace, energy, construction, and heavy equipment sectors who rely on our expertise to improve joint reliability and performance.

Consulting Engineer- Instructor

Position Summary

We are seeking a full-time Consulting Engineer I – Instructor to lead technical training programs focused on the design, analysis, and performance assessment of structural and mechanical bolted joints.

This role is ideal for an experienced engineer with strong technical depth and a passion for education. You will design and deliver training that helps engineers, analysts, and technicians apply rigorous engineering principles, standards, and tools to develop safe, reliable, and cost-effective bolted joint designs.

The role may also include limited engineering consulting support, particularly in joint design reviews or failure investigations involving structural or mechanical joint issues.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and deliver training modules focused on structural and mechanical bolted joint design, analysis, and validation methods.

Teach the application of relevant standards and design codes (e.g., ASCE-360, RCSC, VDI 2230) in both structural steel and mechanical system joints.

Explain key design principles such as joint stiffness, load paths, torque/preload relationships, slip-critical connections, and fatigue performance.

Demonstrate analytical and simulation techniques (including hand calculations and FEA) used in structural and mechanical joint analysis.

Teach root cause analysis for failure mechanisms such as preload loss, self-loosening, embedment, fatigue, and thermal cycling.

Adapt training content to address the specific needs of structural engineers, mechanical engineers, FEA analysts, and QA teams.

Deliver both on-site and remote training sessions to professional engineers, technical specialists, and field personnel.

Maintain technical content by staying current with advances in fastener technologies, joint testing methods, and international standards.

Travel as needed to client sites and industry events.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Structural, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering (or a closely related field).

10+ years of experience in the design, analysis, or validation of structural and/or mechanical bolted joints.

Deep understanding of joint mechanics, preload behavior, torque-tension interaction, and joint failure modes.

Familiarity with both civil/structural joint standards (e.g., ASCE-360, RCSC) and mechanical joint design practices (e.g., VDI 2230).

Strong ability to communicate complex technical concepts to diverse technical audiences.

Excellent presentation and interpersonal skills.

Willingness and ability to travel for on-site instruction and client interaction.

Qualifications

Experience delivering technical instruction or mentoring engineering teams.

Background in fatigue design, joint testing, or failure investigation of bolted joints.

Proficiency in FEA (e.g., Abaqus, ANSYS) for bolted joint simulations.

Interest in or pursuit of professional licensure (PE or equivalent).

VISA Sponsorship is NOT available for this role.

Salary Range: $90,000-$125,000/year commensurate with experience

Why Join Us?

As a Consulting Engineer I – Instructor at MEC, you will directly contribute to improving engineering reliability and design practices across industries. You will empower professionals to make informed design decisions by teaching the science and standards behind structural and mechanical bolted joints—bridging theory and field performance in an impactful, hands-on way.
