DescriptionNURSE MANAGERJOB SUMMARYThe Nurse Manager (NM) holds 24 hour accountability for the implementation of the Vision, Mission and Values of Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital within his/her defined areas of responsibility according to the Master Plan for the Provision of Nursing Care and Services. The NM is responsible for the development and administration of departmental goals and objectives and their concurrence with the hospital mission, vision and goals. The Nurse Manager is responsible for ensuring the delivery of high quality services to all customers, as well as meeting regulatory requirements and continually improving performance.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF POSITIONDevelopment and administration of annual fiscal goals, including operating and capital resources and payroll.Management of unit resources, staffing levels, developing staff, ensuring that assignments of staff reflect their certification or license, scope of practice, patient care needs, and is in compliance with job descriptions, staffing guidelines and policies.Maintaining good communication and promoting high employee morale.Functioning as a chief retention officer, ensuring adequate staffing levels for hospital operations through proactive recruitment and retention efforts. Coaching and supporting staff in critical thinking regarding professional practice.Responsible for a culture of accountability and builds and leads a highly productive team.Knowledgeable in nursing practice and demonstrates competencies for the patient population served.Responsible for quality management, initiates and participates in performance improvement and serves as a role model in improving quality of care and customer service.Responsible to actively participate in applicable committees.Functions with a focus on patient safety and serves as staff advocate.POSITION REQUIREMENTSEducational Requirements:Graduate of an NLN accredited School of Nursing, BSN preferred, MS in Nursing or related field highly desirable.Licensure, Certification and Registration:Current and unrestricted license to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Maryland. Certification in Nursing Administration, Nursing Clinical Practice or Pediatrics required within one year of eligibility. Current CPR. PEARS or PALS within three months Work Orientation and Experience Five years of recent applicable clinical nursing experience, two years of which is in pediatrics. Provides clinical oversight of supplemental staff working on unit and input into their evaluations.INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPSEstablishes collegial relationships with medical staff, managers and supervisors, patients, families and other health system team members. Promotes philosophy of family centered care; recognizes that professional collaboration with patient/family is in the spirit of this approach to care.TOOLS/EQUIPMENT USEDComputer hardware and software. Patient care equipment utilized in his/her area of responsibility.PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT/WORKING CONDITIONSRegular continuous risk of exposure to body fluids, infectious waste and blood borne diseases requiring the use of personal protective equipment and adherence to established protocol. Occasionally subjected to irregular hours. Occasional stress due to emergency situations or multiple demands.This job description identifies the general nature and level of work to be performed.
