We’re working with a fast-growing Series A startup on a mission to transform one of the most notoriously slow and outdated workflows in the built world —
construction permitting . This company is building the
first ever software platform that enables fast, scalable permitting
for any type of construction project, in any U.S. city. Customers include leading developers, builders, architects, and retailers using the platform to permit new apartments, offices, homes, stores, and more — accelerating timelines and slashing costs. Everything the team does centers around
speed and reliability , and they’re now hiring a deeply experienced
AI Engineer
to help bring intelligent automation to this highly manual, document-heavy domain. What You Will Do
As one of the first AI Engineers on the team, you’ll work directly with engineering leadership to shape how the company leverages AI — both technically and strategically. You'll: Develop and deploy AI-driven product features that process unstructured permitting documents, city regulations, and related data.
Architect and integrate ML systems into a modern web stack (React, Tailwind, TypeScript, Vercel, Google Cloud).
Fine-tune and serve LLMs that assist users in navigating complex permitting workflows and requirements.
Build infrastructure, APIs, and backend services to support scalable, reliable AI-powered features.
Collaborate across product, design, and engineering to create intuitive user experiences that are backed by intelligent automation.
Help define the foundation of the AI/ML team, from tooling to roadmap.
Ideal Background
5+ years of AI/ML experience at a tech company (preferably B2B).
Proven ability to stand up systems end-to-end — from infra to API layer to modeling.
Experience working with unstructured documents and/or complex workflows in high-regulation industries (legal tech, insurtech, fintech, HR tech, etc.).
Comfortable owning both model development and production deployment.
Background working with startups between Series A–D; can move quickly in ambiguous environments.
CS degree or Master’s in Machine Learning or related field.
Preferred
Strong experience with LLMs, including fine-tuning, RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation), and building customer-facing features using models.
Familiar with vector databases, LangChain, Docker, and deploying ML-backed APIs.
Great communicator — concise, outcome-oriented, and user-aware.
Talks about impact on
product and business , not just engineering challenges.
Willing to work 4 days/week in-person from downtown San Francisco office.
Compensation and Benefits
Salary : $220,000 – $275,000
Equity : Competitive early-stage package with significant upside
Work Location : Downtown San Francisco HQ, hybrid model (4 days/week onsite)
