Hodges, which granted marriage equality in the U.S. About this job Working with the Institute’s Faculty Chair, Founders Council, and Advisory Committees, the Executive Director will hold overall strategic and operational responsibilities for the Institute’s staff, research, programs, fundraising, budget, and mission. The Executive Director will help to map out the overall goals of the Institute and will drive their day-to-day implementation. They will also help expand a sustainable fundraising framework for the Institute. Among the key accountabilities for the position are: Developing and implementing a strategic vision that aligns with the Institute’s mission and goals; Guiding and supporting staff and visiting scholars; Overseeing and producing high-quality research that informs public policy and advocacy efforts; Cultivating relationships with donors, foundations, and other stakeholders to achieve fundraising goals; Overseeing the Institute’s budgeting and financial management; and Engaging w/policymakers, the media, and the public to disseminate the Institute’s work. Depending on interest, qualifications, experience, and balanced by other program priorities, the Executive Director may teach a course focused on sexual orientation, gender identity, and the law at UCLA Law to be developed and determined in consultation with the Faculty Director of the Williams Institute and the Vice Dean for Curricular and Academic Affairs. Through a collaborative process, create and implement a compelling vision for the future growth and development of the Institute; Help to develop and lead the execution of world-class, innovative public policy research, programs, and initiatives that advance the mission of the Williams Institute; Stay informed of, and engaged with, LGBTQ law and policy to ensure Williams Institute research remains relevant and timely; Help balance the Institute’s overall research and programs in terms of topical areas and relevance to sub-populations within the LGBTQ community . Leadership & Management Lead, coach, and develop the Institute’s excellent senior management team; Create an organizational culture of cooperation, creativity, mutual respect, and professional development; Actively engage and energize Williams Institute staff, volunteers, and funders; Working with the Institute’s Faculty Chair, develop, maintain, and support strong advisory boards, including the Institute’s Founders Council, Faculty Advisory Council, and Legal Council; Support the creation of policies, practices, and organizational culture that maintains high employee morale, and facilitates recruitment and retention of a high-performing team; Revise organization structures, roles, responsibilities, and job descriptions – as necessary (and within budget parameters) – to maximize capacity and impact. Programs & Operations Ensure ongoing research and programmatic excellence, including overseeing effective systems to track progress; Manage the organization’s operations within budgeted guidelines and in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and agreed upon grant guidelines; Lead efforts to evaluate, improve, and expand programmatic offerings and assess organizational capacity to pursue and deliver high quality new work; Ensure consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications, and systems; Help create and monitor the Institute’s annual operating budget. Develop and lead fundraising activities to support the Institute’s mission, including public and private grants, major donors, events, annual giving, planned giving, endowment campaigns, and in-kind support Develop and implement clear, achievable revenue goals and objectives that ensure sufficient funding for the Institute and its people and programs; Partner with and support the work of the Director of Development, Development Team, and Founders Council to ensure all fundraising goals are met or exceeded; Work collaboratively with the Director of Development grow financial resources through expanded individual, corporate, and foundation giving, as well as special events, grants, and in-kind offerings; Personally, and directly maintain positive relationships with key individual and institutional donors. Communications Provide strategic leadership and direction for the dissemination of Williams Institute’s work and promotion of the Institute; Serve as the principal spokesperson for the Institute before a variety of audiences including policymakers, the media, and the public; Maintain and strengthen the Williams Institute’s brand. Lead the Institute in maintaining and building effective partnerships and collaborations; Engage with stakeholders in government, the private sector, the nonprofit sector, academia, and the media to support and inform the William Institute’s research and programs. Qualifications
Proven professional track record including a minimum of 7+ years of successful senior management and leadership experience, ideally in an academic, legal, or LGBTQ+ organization or environment; Successful track record in nonprofit fundraising, including individual and institutional giving, corporate and community partnerships, and large-scale special events; Demonstrated administrative and organizational development skills; Track record of innovation and program building/expansion; Excellent team building and management skills including proven ability to mentor, coach, and develop staff with an ability to generate investment and enthusiasm; Exceptional written and verbal communication skills and ability to represent Williams Institute to the press, policymakers, and the public; Financial oversight and budget management experience in an organization of comparable size and complexity and with similar funding sources; Demonstrated ability to create and maintain productive relationships with colleagues, constituents, donors, and advisory board members; Knowledge of current LGBTQ law and policy issues; A J.D. or a social science Ph.D. is required. NOTE: This role requires flexibility and ability to travel frequently (including internationally) and to do some evening and weekend work.
