The Office of Early College and Career Education (ECCE) is a department that is nested within the Office of College and Career Success (OCCS). ECCE strives to improve the quality of college and career education by increasing students' access to dual credit and dual enrollment opportunities in early college credit attainment, as well as to expand postsecondary enrollment and completion. In addition, ECCE strives to enhance access to STEM, CTE programming, and high-quality Work-Based Learning opportunities for middle and high school students to support youth employment and economic mobility. Job Summary: The Early College STEM Specialist is based at a school and acts as a member of the school’s leadership team. This is a 52-week position that will report to and be evaluated by the Department of Early College and Career Education (ECCE). The Early College STEM Specialist is responsible for implementing targeted strategies that prepare students to access and thrive in postsecondary career options. The primary responsibility is to provide direct services to high schools in order to advance a coherent and universal understanding of postsecondary readiness by tactically preparing and supporting students, teachers, counselors, and school leaders. This includes procuring and coordinating opportunities for students, ensuring students have access to advanced coursework and industry-aligned certification, and building operational capacity at the school to implement dual enrollment and dual credit, internship programs, college visits, enrichment opportunities, industry site visits, team-based challenges, intensive career exploration activities, other requirements aligned to satisfying the College and Career Pathway Endorsement, and more. The Early College STEM Specialist is the primary "Early College Champion" at their school site, serving as an ECCE ambassador to further the school-wide integration of ECCE programs and practices. This position will also be a face of the ECCE programs, interfacing with parents and community members to support enrollment in ECCE aligned opportunities. The Early College STEM Specialist will cultivate and support crucial relationships with industry and college partners, working in conjunction with the school administration, teaching staff, and CPS central office staff to provide a robust set of experiences for students that result in students graduating high school with early college credits, and workplace skills for employability and success in a career of choice. This position is a primary point of contact for many stakeholders, including industry partners, early college partners, post-secondary partners, and other external organizations, and must ensure their continued high level of collaboration and support as well as their continued integration into the life of the school. This is a full-time exempt position that will be paid for time worked on a salary basis. This position will be held accountable for the following responsibilities: Serve as a primary point at schools for coordinating with partner high schools the logistics aligned to Early College programs of ECCE Facilitate school and external stakeholder communication and collaboration as appropriate to execute an effective early college program Collaborate with school administrators and facilitate support to maximize student success in early college courses Work with school staff to reach school-wide integration of ECCE programs and practices aimed at increasing the students who earn college credit and the College and Career Pathway Endorsements ahead of graduation Create plans for students to earn college credits and industry-aligned career certifications Aim to document participation and to connect students to supervised career development experiences, industry site visits, team-based challenges, and other requirements aligned to satisfying the College and Career Pathway Endorsement Facilitate the enrollment of students in strategically scheduled dual enrollment courses at City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) and other approved institutions of higher education or dual credit courses offered by certified school faculty Lead or participate in procurement and management of budgets for designated school programs Build the capacity of schools to further the school-wide integration of ECCE programs and practices, including but not limited to dual enrollment and dual credit, internship programs, college visits, enrichment opportunities, industry site visits, team-based challenges, intensive career exploration activities, other requirements aligned to satisfying the College and Career Pathway Endorsement, and more Interface with parents and community members to support enrollment in ECCE-aligned opportunities Coordinate recruitment and engagement efforts for students in early college programs and related supports Enrichment and Community Engagement for Career and College Readiness Expand WBL and Internship Opportunities: Actively engage existing partners and seek new partnerships to create a comprehensive range of career and college learning opportunities that promote real-world skill-building through work-based learning (WBL) and internships for students. Develop Career-Enrichment Programs: Support the development and implementation of engaging career-related enrichment programs that inspire students, facilitate recruitment, and increase interest in various career fields through practical experiences and hands-on learning. Promote Career Awareness and Engagement: Foster awareness and student engagement in different career pathways through targeted partnerships and activities (e.g., Career Exploration Family Nights) that also support academic achievement across key subjects, particularly literacy and math. Act as Program Ambassador: Serve as an ambassador for school and ECCE programs during school visits and recruitment events, representing career-focused pathways and educational opportunities that enhance student preparedness for college and career success. Create plans for students to earn college credits and industry-aligned career certifications Aim to document participation and to connect students to supervised career development experiences, industry site visits, team-based challenges, and other requirements aligned to satisfying the College and Career Pathway Endorsement Collaborate with the Work-Based Learning team and other ECCE teams to align on priorities, approaches, timelines, and selection of students Engage school leadership and industry partners to determine learning goals and projects, for placements in work experiences Serve as a point of contact and ambassador of ECCE programs and services when conducting regular check-ins with students, teachers, and managers Maintain a strong relationship with strategic corporate partners and facilitate purposeful interactions and a high level of engagement Other duties as assigned In order to be successful and achieve the above responsibilities, this position must possess the following qualifications: Education Required: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant field of study Master’s degree in STEM field, Education, or related field preferred. Experience Required: Minimum of four (4) years of experience in education, non-profit or philanthropy, consulting or a STEM-related field; Experience working on multiple, complex, and interconnected projects/work streams simultaneously; Experience managing relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including industry partners, government agencies, schools and/or community organizations; Experience in an urban school environment, preferred Experience with STEM landscape, preferred. Other Requirements: Occasional evening and weekend work is required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Demonstrated ability to resolve issues and conflicts within the project team and manage project dependencies and critical paths Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills Ability to collaborate and communicate with school leadership, universities, partners, and other key stakeholders to facilitate successful implementation and execution of projects and initiatives Ability to create and use robust data sets to inform planning, execution, and drive for results Ability to prioritize, manage, and drive success on multiple projects simultaneously Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse school community to promote early college, STEM, and industry-aligned awareness and engagement through targeted partnerships and activities Demonstrated technical skills: Google Workspace, Microsoft Office (Excel) and data management/analysis tools Proactive self-starter capable of navigating ambiguity; able to troubleshoot and devise targeted ad hoc solutions Evident passion for and commitment to serving students; practical understanding of the urban district setting for school improvement; comfort with high school-aged students Knowledge of STEM scheduling and programming for both High School and City Colleges of Chicago (CCC), and other approved institutions of higher education, preferred Conditions of Employment As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to: Establish/Maintain Chicago Residency - Employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date and maintain residency throughout their employment with the district. The Chicago residency requirement does not apply to temporary/part-time positions, however, all CPS employees must be residents of Illinois.
