This position is open to the public and all current City employees covered under the City's collective bargaining agreement with STATE AND MUNICIPAL TEAMSTERS, CHAUFFEURS, & HELPERS UNION, LOCAL 700 - BARGAINING UNIT 08. Only employees in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid.

Under general supervision, coordinates, supervises and inspects the work of Motor Truck Drivers (MTDs) engaged in equipment operation and general maintenance activities; and performs related duties as required
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Supervises, coordinates, and inspects the work of Motor Truck Drivers ("MTDs") engaged in operating trucks and heavy automotive equipment. Creates work assignments and re-assigns MTDs to specific projects as necessitated by emergencies, work priorities, and program changes. Reviews and analyzes a variety of reports concerning unit operations, productivity, and collection data to ensure maximum efficiency. Establishes standards of procedure for equipment testing and operation. Prepares daily assignment sheets, project summary and operation reports of work activities. Maintains mileage, oil, and gasoline consumption records. Serves as consultant for problems involving equipment operations. Maintains work records and prepares various manpower and work status reports Initiates and administers disciplinary action, as required, in an expedited manner. Oversees the training of new employees in work and safety procedures and evaluates their performance. Prepares and processes reports documenting workplace incidents including accidents and personal injuries. Ensures all personnel comply with established policies and procedures. Conducts periodic checks of licensing requirements for MTDs. Maintains fleet of vehicles/trucks operational and transports equipment and drivers to divisions/bureaus as needed.

THIS POSITION IS IN THE CAREER SERVICE
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Two years of progressively responsible experience in operating automotive equipment.
• A valid State of Illinois class "A" or "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required.
NOTE:
You must provide your valid State of Illinois Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at time of processing.
PREFERENCES
Chicago Department of Aviation
• Requires an eligible applicant possess a Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class "A" or "B" with both a "P"
and
"X" endorsement and maintained throughout employment.
• Applicants that have
three years
of airfield driving experience will be given preference
• Airfield driving experience is defined as a candidate who has maintained three years of driving privileges (either advanced aka red stripe or basic aka yellow stripe) while employed with the City of Chicago as a Motor Truck Driver. Candidates who do not have advanced driving privileges must secure the advanced driving certification (aka red stripe driving privileges) within 60 days of employment and maintained throughout employment.
NOTE:
The candidate(s) selected for hire at the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) must pass an airport background check and a Security Threat Assessment (STA).
SELECTION REQUIREMENTS
This position requires candidates to pass both a written job knowledge exam and a supervisory skills assessment.
Exam result emails will be sent out by the Department of Human Resources after results have been compiled and analyzed. Candidates who successfully pass all exam components and evaluation will be hired in accordance with the CBA.
TEST DATES: Tentatively scheduled for week of September 22, 2025
If you currently hold the title of Foreman of Motor Truck Driver (FMTD) and would like to bid for an opportunity to change departments, you must fill out an application. Current FMTDs who have successfully submitted an application DO NOT have to complete the written job knowledge exam and the supervisory assessment portion of the hiring process in order to move forward.
Once your application has been reviewed and considered qualified your name will be placed on our universal referral list. In agreement with local union 700's contract, vacancies are filled by candidates in rank order. As vacancies become available department liaisons will reach out to candidates (Qualifications vary by department) on the referral list that were ranked in order by their current title and Bargaining Unit seniority date.
