DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.

The Bureau of Engineering Design & Construction (BEDC) has a portfolio of capital projects valued at $23.8B, with another $10.5B projected over the next 10 years. BEDC implements projects that ensure the operation and maintenance of a high-quality water supply system, including infrastructure across wastewater treatment plants, dams, bridges, reservoirs, tunnels, and more throughout NYC and its watershed.

BEDC seeks to hire an Environmental Engineering Intern to serve as an Assistant Project Manager for the Water System Capital Program (WSCP). Located at our headquarters in Queens, NY, the candidate will assist in supervising water and wastewater projects within the watershed, including dams, aqueducts, treatment plants, and other infrastructure. Responsibilities include planning, coordinating, and directing project implementation, monitoring permits, conducting field surveys, reviewing contract documents, participating in field investigations, and working with the construction management team on inspections. The role may require extended hours and fieldwork in various weather conditions.

Preferred Skills

Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.)

Ability to operate a motor vehicle for site visits and inspections

Understanding of project management principles used by DEP

Excellent communication skills and ability to meet deadlines

Critical thinking and independent data analysis skills

Minimum Qualifications

Baccalaureate degree in environmental, fire protection, chemical, mechanical, petroleum, aeronautical, or materials engineering from an accredited college; or

Baccalaureate degree in related technology with two years of relevant experience.
