Topeka, Kansas Organizational Background For over 100 years, the Fuel True - Independent Energy and Convenience has been representing the independent energy marketing industry in Kansas. The association is the oldest Petroleum Association in the United States and has two subsidiaries that offer products and services relative to the petroleum and convenience retailing industry. Fuel True, a state-wide trade association, provides members the tools to help better manage their energy marketing and retail businesses. Members receive value from the range of programs and services designed specifically to help them in the day-to-day business operations. The mission of Fuel True is to provide services that reflect current business needs and to represent the business interests of the independent energy marketers and convenience store owners of Kansas. The organization is led by a 19-member Board of Directors and currently has 5 staff members. The annual operating budget is approximately $500,000 with primary sources of revenue coming from membership fees, revenue from contractual services to partner organizations, and investment income. Fuel True is located in Topeka, Kansas, just blocks from the Kansas State Capitol. Topeka has a population of approximately 125,000 and is located within easy driving distance to Kansas City. Position Summary Fuel True seeks an experienced and highly skilled Executive Director to lead and support all areas of the organization including strategic planning, program operations and development, and regulatory and legislative advocacy. The ideal candidate will possess knowledge of the petroleum and retailing industry including regulations, marketing, and business development. The Executive Director will possess strong leadership skills, the ability to work closely and effectively with the Board of Directors, and strong operational and financial management skills. The Executive Director will report to the Boards of Directors of Fuel True, SERVCO, and Tank Management Services and will possess the ability to lead and evaluate all programs to ensure consistency with the philosophy and mission of the organization. Key Responsibilities The Executive Director is the key management leader of Fuel True directly supervising all activities of the organization, its programs, staff, and facilities. Other key duties include legislative and regulatory advocacy, engaging with key partners, and building revenue-generating programs and services. Essential Functions of the Fuel True Executive Director Develops and maintains working relationships with Fuel True personnel, business partners, industry leaders, and legislators. Works collaboratively with all staff to build and maintain a strong team environment to accomplish the tasks necessary to serve and support the goals of Fuel True. Develops and implements programs, projects, and activities designed to elevate the perceived value of Fuel True. Interacts on an ongoing basis with Fuel True membership to determine satisfaction levels; suggests new services and programs to maintain or increase member satisfaction levels; and addresses any member attrition concerns. Always represents Fuel True professionally and positively. Actively develops and identifies prospective companies who are good candidates for membership with Fuel True. Facilitates events with legislators so they fully understand the Fuel True industry. Drives revenue generation through membership sales and retention. Serves as a registered lobbyist for Fuel True and reports all legislative discussions affecting the industry to the Fuel True Board. Monitors and reports all legislative decisions affecting the industry to the Executive Committee. Additional Skills and Attributes Needed for the Position Computer experience in QuickBooks and Microsoft Office Software (MS Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint). Ability to communicate clearly and professionally through both verbal and written skills. Ability to present effectively in large and small group settings. Ability to organize, multi-task, plan, and set priorities with minimal supervision. Ability to work independently and in team settings. Ability to effectively deal with both internal and external customers. Ability to think critically and use logic and reasoning to identify solutions, conclusions, and approaches to problems. Ability to or willingness to learn how to effectively utilize social media. Strong interpersonal communication skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other associations and Fuel True associate members. Demonstrate poise, tact, and diplomacy with the ability to handle sensitive and confidential information and situations. Professional Qualifications and Experience Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in business administration or related area. Minimum of five years of administrative experience at the executive or supervisory level. Familiarity with legislative processes or experience in lobbying. Valid driver’s license with a good driving record and proof of auto insurance. Compensation The salary range proposed for this position is $170,000 - $185,000, commensurate with experience and education. Additional incentive-based compensation will be available to the successful candidate based on Board approval. The position comes with a comprehensive array of benefits including health insurance, life insurance, retirement pension plan, and paid vacation/sick leave and holidays.
