Job Summary

The Director of Safety and Compliance reports to the VP of Safety and Risk Management and is responsible for assisting with the development and implementation of an integrated safety management system to advance PAL’s culture of safety and quality.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Direct Safety and Compliance functions, including personnel supervision, performance evaluation, and professional development Develop and implement initiatives that strengthen hazard identification and risk mitigation processes Collaborate with Safety and Risk Management teams across PAL operating companies to develop a unified safety management system Ensure compliance with federal, state, local, company, and customer safety requirements, including DOT, OSHA, and EPA regulations Prepare and submit FMCSA, OSHA, and EPA reports and documentation for internal and external stakeholders Partner with HR, Recruiting, and Driver Development teams to support Operations and ensure FMCSA and company requirements are met Oversee and maintain FMCSA driver qualification records including Clearinghouse queries, drug/alcohol testing, MVR checks, CDL verification, medical certifications, and hours-of-service tracking Implement effective, field-based driver engagement safety initiatives to promote best practices across locations and regions Monitor and manage CSA BASIC scores, convictions, DataQs, fines, and motor carrier management information (MCMIS) Assess, manage, and report safety and environmental risks in coordination with internal and external stakeholders Leverage safety systems and in-cab telematics to track driver behavior and maintain FMCSA compliance Assist with testing, troubleshooting, and implementing safety tools/technologies in partnership with third-party vendors for enhanced user experience and acceptance Conduct statistical analysis of key safety behaviors and trends to support safety and quality management goals Lead post-accident and injury investigations, identify root causes, and work with insurance providers to manage claims Champion driver and customer-focused initiatives to strengthen safety culture and quality outcomes Engage cross-functional teams to identify inefficiencies and implement continuous improvement initiatives Perform additional duties as assigned

Requirements

High school education required. Bachelor’s Degree in safety-related field preferred. 10 years of safety and compliance leadership experience and seven (7) years of DOT experience required.

Regulatory compliance: in-depth knowledge of OSHA, DOT, and EPA regulations Incident investigation: skilled in root cause analysis and implementing corrective actions/preventive measures Risk assessment: proficient at identifying, evaluating, and managing operational risks Emergency response planning: leads through crisis scenarios and ensuring business continuity Critical thinking: assesses complex situations and makes data-informed decsions Problem-solving: adept at developing practicable safety and compliance solutions Process improvement: strong understanding of Lean Six Sigma principles Interpersonal skills: ability to build trust and influence behavior Mentoring: ability to recognize and cultivate talent Communication: excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to engage stakeholders at all levels Organizational skills: excels at time management and managing through change Conflict resolution: ability to de-escalate conflict Willingness to travel up to 50%
