Vice President of Development . This role plays an integral part of the Symphony’s executive team, and will be responsible for spearheading the organization’s fundraising and strategic partnership efforts. Newark, NJ Reporting to the President & CEO, the Vice President of Development (VP) will be an integral part of the NJS’ executive management team and is responsible for all aspects of the fundraising and strategic partnership efforts of the Symphony. He or she will provide leadership and coordination of the Development department while also personally achieving an individual portfolio with six- to seven-figure major gifts. In partnership with the President & CEO, he or she will devise and implement a fundraising strategy that will ensure long-term sustainable growth in the annual fund, endowment, and planned giving, and deepen NJS’ relationships with its donors and its community. This position also provides support to the Development Committee of the board, in addition to managing some outside consultants and business relationships. As the NJS embarks on a transformational initiative to relocate to Jersey City and activate the Symphony Center as its new home base, the VP will be given the rare and exciting opportunity to successfully drive forward the endeavor. The VP will spearhead a $60M comprehensive campaign, including multiple seven- to eight-figure naming rights opportunities, over the next five years to raise the necessary funds for the Symphony Center operations. Other specific responsibilities of the VP include: Design and execute an annual fundraising strategy that includes, but is not limited to, the current five-year campaign, annual fund giving (individual, corporate/institutional, foundational, planned giving) endowment and special events. Set annual and multi-year goals, develop and implement plans to achieve those goals, and forge new relationships to build NJS’ philanthropic visibility. Devise strategy for the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major gift prospects and donors, transforming existing giving programs, the campaign, endowment and Jersey City naming opportunities. Analyze the effectiveness of fundraising efforts to meet organizational goals and provide timely reports to the President & CEO, CFO, and Board of Trustees that track progress toward annual fundraising goals. Rationalize donor engagement strategies across NJS' philanthropic base to cultivate and secure new gifts and increase support from existing donors. Oversee and expand revenue of high-impact events that engage donors across all giving levels, fostering relationships and support for our mission. Actively participate in executive leadership meetings and contribute to strategic discussions. Work with the President & CEO, and other executives, in defining business plans that support the organization’s strategic priorities with a growth mindset, creative ideas, and clear vision for how the Development team will support and be integrated into the plan. Collaborate with the CFO to oversee the department’s budget planning and financial strategy. Work in partnership with marketing team to promote development programs and events. Support the use of clear and consistent brand and communications that articulate NJS’ vision and mission, within the development marketing assets and giving programs across all donor segments across New Jersey. Provide input for NJS website, newsletters, annual impact reports, and social media messages as they relate to fundraising campaigns and goals. Liaise with the Board of Trustees’ Development Committee. Serve as the lead visionary and strategist for the Development team, fostering a collaborative culture among staff, and leading an effective development program while keeping the organization's mission and strategic plan at the forefront. Provide operational oversight across the department, establishing goals and priorities, monitoring activities, evaluating progress, and adjusting as necessary. Determine the staffing needs of the department, recommend responsible use of resources, and direct staff to ensure the success of NJS fundraising strategies. Create and maintain a best-in-class Development team by training and cultivating an environment of success, building on the Symphony’s artistic merit, educational initiatives and community engagement to increase fundraising. Enhance the team's effectiveness and productivity by providing coaching and mentorship, motivating team members with energy, humor, and passion, and ensuring clear expectations. Oversee best practices in data management with a strong focus on development/fundraising systems and policies to be used across the department. As much as is practicable, attend orchestra performances and events, including travel to NJS’ five subscription venues across the state. Represent NJS at major events and forums. Liaise with NJS lobbying firms and elected officials in conjunction with the President & CEO. Remain current with funding trends at the local, state and national level to help position NJS ahead of major funding changes. Key Selection Criteria The next VP of Development of the New Jersey Symphony will be an adept frontline fundraiser and strategic thinker who brings energy and a well-rounded array of fundraising competencies to inspire, guide, and mentor an effective Development team committed to advancing the NJS mission. The VP will be proactive and hands-on, contributing to big-picture strategy while ensuring excellence in execution. This person must possess exceptional skills in prospecting, cultivating, and soliciting high-level donors, and managing teams of employees. This person must be passionate about classical music and intrinsically motivated by the mission of NJS. Ideally, this person will have an acute understanding of the unique and intricate business model of the American symphony organization along with successful experience conducting major capital or endowment campaigns. The next VP will be a creative thinker with an optimistic and positive demeanor and will be comfortable in taking initiative and challenging preconceptions. The ideal candidate will demonstrate their qualifications for this position through the following: A minimum of 10 or more years of related experience across a variety of fundraising channels – including major gifts, corporate giving, institutional giving/philanthropy, capital campaigns, annual fund, matching campaigns, endowments, special events, membership, and planned giving – with a career track that demonstrates increasing levels of tenure and responsibility; Successful experience in a senior development management role, with demonstrated ability to set strategy, inspire and motivate teams, and organize initiatives; A record of personal success in raising money through six- and seven-figure gifts from individuals, businesses, foundations, corporations, or the public sector; Strong network of funding sources with the ability to develop and maintain strong, long-term donor relationships; Proven ability to cultivate existing donors and to initiate new prospects; Excellent verbal and written communication skills; excellent public speaking and presentation skills; Exceptional interpersonal skills and a professional demeanor, with ability to exercise the utmost discretion with confidential/sensitive information; Experience leveraging CRM systems (preferably Tessitura) for donor segmentation, research, and volunteer management; proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite of products required; Experience and familiarity with the New Jersey donor community is extremely advantageous; CFRE is a plus.
