Emergency Communications, a division of the Norfolk Police Department, serves as a central point for timely and accurate 24-hour communication with all public safety units. It provides public access for emergency 911 services and non-emergency responses from police, fire, and medical personnel, operating 24/7. It also manages multi-jurisdictional, state, and federal notifications regarding public safety.
The role involves receiving requests for police, fire, and medical services via multi-line telephones, including 911 lines and computer-aided dispatch (CAD), and dispatching units accordingly. It requires operating telecommunications equipment, monitoring radios, and managing data entry and retrieval from computer systems.
Essential functions include:
Responding to emergency requests, determining caller needs, and relaying information to dispatchers.
Dispatching police, fire, or EMS units and monitoring radio transmissions.
Assisting personnel and the public by searching warrants, locating information, and contacting outside agencies.
Training and certifying on Norfolk 911 call handling and dispatch equipment.
Handling stressful calls effectively and entering data into CAD systems.
Maintaining communication with various agencies and navigating desktop computers efficiently.
Requirements include: Knowledge equivalent to four years of high school education. Six months of experience as a Public Safety Telecommunicator. Typing speed of at least 30 words per minute.
Preferred certifications: Virginia DCJS Telecommunicator certification, VCIN/NCIC access. CPR and Emergency Medical Dispatch certification. Ability to obtain additional certifications within six months.
Work hours:
The position involves 12-hour shifts, rotating monthly between day (7 a.m.) and night (7 p.m.) shifts, totaling 84 hours bi-weekly. Practice typing test:
