We’re empowering smarter medical and economic decision-making to help transform the way people manage their health at all stages of life. Every day, more than 10 million tests are run on Abbott’s diagnostics instruments, providing lab results for millions of people.This role oversees the design, development, and validation of software for embedded systems, ensuring compliance with FDA requirements. They play a crucial role in software design, coding, and validation, addressing moderate scope problems, and participating in software development activities under guidance and mentoring junior engineers. Adherence to FDA-compliant Design Control procedures and proficiency in software implementation are key aspects of the role.What You’ll Work OnDesign, implement, and evaluate software using languages such as C, C++, C#, and PythonAssist in preparing software design requirements and specifications in accordance with Abbott's design development processEvaluate selected designs through testing and documentation, addressing problems of moderate scope. Participate in software development, verification, and validation activities under guidance Adhere to FDA-compliant Design Control procedures for software development. Demonstrate proficiency in software implementationExercise judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate actions.Demonstrates expert knowledge and proficiency of the complete software development process. Design and implement robust, scalable, and maintainable software using Java, with a strong grasp of OOP, data structures, concurrency, and design patterns. Develop and maintain database, JDBC, RESTful and SOAP-based web services, ensuring high performance and security.Architect and implement microservices and SOA-based solutions using frameworks like Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, and Jakarta EE.Lead the integration of internal and external systems using API gateways, message brokers (e.g., Kafka, RabbitMQ), and enterprise integration patterns.Proficiency in Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP)Oversee end-to-end implementation of all internal and external interfaces, implementation patterns and unit, integration and performance testing strategy for all features in one or more subsystems.Debugs, troubleshoots, and isolates software problems as well as provide strategic solutions, analysis, and contribute to process/design improvements.Issue tracking and design description process with input from others. Communicates with internal stakeholders on decisions that impact their team.Assist with design reviews, create/update design documents and address review feedback. Assess areas impacted by new feature requests and determine approach to accommodate new capabilities.Contribute to project planning by providing effort estimates for implementing new features/ functionality. Provides technical feasibility assessment on emerging product requirements, leads proof-of-concepts and proposes optimal design solutions compatible with the software system architecture.Supports root cause investigations on high-complexity or high-severity issues. Support all Company initiatives as identified by management and in support of Quality Management Systems (QMS), Environmental Management Systems (EMS), and other regulatory requirements.Complies with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, Company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments. Maintains positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors.Required QualificationsBachelor’s Degree (±16 years) in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or related fieldMinimum 6 years of related experience, or Master’s Degree with 4+ years of related experienceExcellent written and verbal communication skillsStrong familiarity with current development tools (IDEs, debuggers, unit test frameworks)Knowledge of design controls and regulations for medical device development is a plusUnderstanding of quality software engineering principles aligned with ISO, IEEE, or FDA-recognized standards is a plusPreferred QualificationsMaster’s Degree in Engineering or Computer Science preferredExperience testing software is a plusProven expertise in software architecture and framework developmentSolid understanding of embedded software principles and best practices including SDLC.Strong hands-on programming knowledge in JavaExperience with visual modeling, multi-threading, formal development methodologies, and source code managementMedical device product development knowledge is a plusAbility to independently learn and explore existing system functionalityStrong knowledge of C and C++Experience with cross-platform programming languages like React is a plusProgressively responsible experience across various software engineering disciplines and programming methodsIntermediate to moderate understanding of Linux operating systemsDemonstrated technical proficiency, creativity, and independent thinkingStrong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to debug and resolve issuesAbility to multi-task and prioritize effectivelyExperience with Raspberry Pi development is a plusLearn more about our health and wellness benefits, which provide the security to help you and your family live full lives: www.abbottbenefits.comFollow your career aspirations to Abbott for diverse opportunities with a company that can help you build your future and live your best life. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
