VACATION BENEFITS - Lateral entry for experienced communications officer applicants: Based on evaluation by the City of the lateral entry candidate's ability to perform required duties at a level commensurate to their years of experience, the City may, at its sole discretion, compensate and extend vacation benefits to a lateral entry candidate up to the same rate as established for current employees in the same classification and who have the same time in service with the City as the lateral entry candidate. SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Under the general supervision of the Support Services Manager, and the direct supervision of the shift Supervisor, a Communications Officer performs a variety of duties related to radio, telephone, automated data communications, and clerical functions within the Police Division. A Communications Officer operates base radio console equipment and acts as a central dispatch/control or relay point to receive and transmit information to safety services (Police & Fire), and other appropriate personnel; operates computer terminals such as LEADS to verify vehicle and personal data, and CAD terminals to record calls for service from the public and track police unit activity; answers inquiries from the public, directs them to the appropriate personnel with the Police Division as well as other City Divisions; operates emergency equipment including 911. Adherence to all applicable Federal and State safety laws, rules, and regulations and City safety policies/ procedures.
Communication Officers are subject to working varied hours, holidays, and overtime as required during assigned shifts and will be subject to emergency call-ins for critical incidents or other situations requiring emergency or additional communication staffing. Regular and punctual attendance is regarded as an essential requirement of this classification.
Given the nature of this classification's duties/responsibilities, it has been designated as "Non-Exempt" under the governing Fair Labor Standards Act regulations and, therefore, is entitled to formal overtime compensation or formal compensatory time. Example of Duties
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION: Receives and records telephone calls & complaints as well as answers inquiries from the public regarding a variety of issues and events. Provides directions to City facilities, special events, and programs, or advises residents regarding the location of various streets within the community. Receives and transmits radio communications and dispatches safety services, and appropriate personnel as well as coordinating back up support as necessary. Operates LEADS computer terminal to verify and record vehicle and personal data (e.g. verifies vehicle registrations and driver's license information; enters and cancels warrants; runs record checks; enters and clears missing persons, property, etc.). Prepares and maintains logs and records of calls, complaints, receptions and transmissions for police and fire personnel. Monitors radio frequencies of the Police Division, the Fire Division, other City Divisions and surrounding police agencies. Dispatches service personnel during and after normal hours of operation. Provides the public and City employees information concerning special events, landmarks, and directions. Female Communications Officers may assist police officers in the processing of female prisoners when female officers are not available. Activates the Severe Weather Siren system and the Mass Contact Notification System (CodeRed) for tornado watches & warnings, and severe weather, as well as for pre-scheduled tests. From the collective bargaining agreement (Section 4.5) Lateral entry: Based on evaluation by the City of the lateral transfer employee's ability to perform required duties at a level commensurate to their years of experience, the City may at its sole discretion compensate and extend vacation benefits to a lateral transfer employee up to the same rate as established for current employees in the same classification and who have the same time in service with the City as the lateral transfer employee.
Starting pay for this position is currently $27.53 per hour and increases to a maximum of $34.94 over an 8-year period using the current matrix. The City observes 12 paid holidays per year. There is a one-year probationary period; after successful completion, you will be represented by the OPBA Union. Communications Officers are covered by the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System. Sick leave may be transferred from other public jurisdictions provided it has not been cashed out. Sick leave is accumulated at the rate of 15 days per year. There is no maximum accumulation. Unused sick leave is paid according to a formula if an employee leaves, upon normal retirement, with at least 10 years of service or, upon voluntary separation, after 15 years of service. Vacation: End of 1 year to 5 years - 85 hours; beginning 6 years to end 11 years - 127.50 hours; beginning 12 years to end 19 years - 170 hours; beginning 20 years to end 25 years - 212.50 hours; beginning 26 years and beyond - 255 hours.
