Special Information

This position is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to

complete their work primarily at an NAU site, campus, or facility with

or without accommodation. Opportunities for remote work are rare.

Job Description

Successful candidates will work as members of the Academic Computing and

Datacenter Computing team. Senior Linux System Administrators will be

responsible for administering NAU's physical and virtual server

environment and associated services in a 24X7X365 environment. Job

duties include, but are not limited to: managing and maintaining Linux

servers and other mission critical enterprise systems, ensuring the

security of the Linux environment, monitoring Linux system performance,

performance tuning, advance troubleshooting support of issues related to

the Linux environment, working collaboratively with development,

database, and network teams to support business needs, developing and

implementing automation scripts to streamline system administration,

maintaining detailed documentation of the Linux environment, and

communicating effectively with external departments when managing and

maintaining layered software services and services. All members of the

Academic Computing and Datacenter Computing team are expected to

participate in a 24X7 on-call rotation.

System Administration - 65%

Manage and maintain Linux servers in an enterprise production

environment.

Perform system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability

of hardware, server resources, and key processes.

Manage and maintain system backups and recoveries. Ensure the security of the Linux environment by implementing

necessary updates, patches, and security configurations.

Monitor system performance and make recommendations for improvement. Perform capacity planning and recommend system upgrades as needed. Provide advanced troubleshooting support for issues related to Linux

systems and related services.

Collaborate with other IT teams to resolve complex issues and ensure

system availability.

Automation - 20%

Develop and implement automation scripts using shell scripting,

Python, Ansible, or similar tools to streamline system

administration tasks.

Automate routine tasks to ensure efficient use of time and

resources.

Documentation and Reporting - 10%

Work closely with development, network, and database teams to

support business needs.

Maintain detailed documentation of the environment, including

procedures, configurations, and troubleshooting guides.

Adheres to all incident, problem, and change management policies.

Other - 5%

Work closely with team members, ITS staff, and external departments

to provide subject matter expertise.

Participate in long-term forecasting and strategic planning of

technologies.

Participate in 7x24 on-call schedule to provide support for

servers/services. Must be able to respond to emergencies by being

available on-site or remotely connected within 30 minutes under

normal circumstances.

Perform all other duties as assig ed.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field; AND, 3-5 years of relevant experience; OR, Any combination of relevant education and experience may be

substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year

basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with configuration management tools and version control

systems (Ansible, Azure DevOps, Git, etc.).

Proficiency with virtualization technologies (Hyper-V, VMM, KVM,

XenServer, etc.).

Experience with load balancing solutions (Citrix NetScaler/ADC,

etc.).

Familiarity with Firewall Services (Palo Alto, Cisco, etc.). Familiarity with antivirus software (e.g., Microsoft Defender). Experience with log aggregation technologies (Splunk, Sentinel,

etc.).

Experience with ITSM/ITIL digital workflow system (e.g.,

ServiceNow).

Experience automating routine tasks to streamline system

administration and improve efficiency.

Experience maintaining detailed documentation of the environment,

including procedures, configurations, and troubleshooting guides.

Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud),

Listserv, and NetApp is a plus.
