PLEASE APPLY IMMEDIATELY.** Under general supervision, the Water Utility Worker II performs journey level work in the maintenance and repair of water distribution facilities; operates heavy equipment and tools in a highly skilled manner; and performs other related duties as assigned.SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:Supervision is provided by the Deputy Director of Utilities or their designee. Essential Job FunctionsEssential job functions may include, but are not limited to, the following: (These functions may not be present in all positions in this classification. Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind work assignments as needed.)Performs a variety of activities associated with the installation, modification, service, and repair of water distribution facilities and equipment; locates water services and mains; installs and repairs water mains, services, meters, valves, fire hydrants, and other water distribution system appurtenances; notifies customers of scheduled and emergency outages and shut-downs of the distribution system for planned and emergency work; may operate heavy machinery including dump truck and backhoe; conducts traffic control; maintains and operates safely and effectively jackhammers, concrete saws, compressors, and stompers; operates company vehicles and equipment according to established safety procedures; and performs other related duties as assigned. Maintains regular attendance. Qualification GuidelinesTo qualify for this classification, an individual must possess any combination of experience and education that would likely produce the required knowledge and abilities, and enable the individual to successfully perform the essential job functions of the position. A typical combination is:Education and/or Experience:High School Diploma or GED equivalent and two years of experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of a municipal water system infrastructure are required. Knowledge of:Methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of water services and mains, valves, meters, and various other water system appurtenances; record keeping and reporting procedures; and safe work practices.Ability to:Read and interpret construction plans and specifications; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; and understand and communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing. Licenses and CertificatesPossession of and ability to maintain a valid Class "C" California Driver's License is required. Ability to obtain a Class "B" California Driver's License within one year of appointment is required. Possession of a Grade D1 Water Distribution Operator certificate issued by the California State Water Resources Control Board (State Water Board) at time of application is required.PHYSICAL DEMANDS:Ability to lift up to 75 pounds, or more than 75 pounds with assistance; sit, stand, squat, kneel, climb stairs, stoop, and walk for prolonged periods of time; and get from one location to another in the course of doing business. Additionally, the position requires near and far vision in reading work related documents and using the computer, and acute hearing is required when providing phone and personal service. WORK ENVIRONMENT:Employee generally works outdoors. Employee will travel to different locations and be exposed to inclement weather conditions, noise, vibration, dust, or potentially hazardous chemicals. Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high and the employee may occasionally be exposed to loud talking and interruptions from telephones and/or members of the public. The nature of the work also requires incumbents to drive motorized vehicles and work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions.SELECTION PROCESS:Applicants must complete an application online prior to the final filing date.
