The Laboratory Technologist collaborates with researchers and departmental staff to provide technical, diagnostic, and training support. Entity: Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC - Univ) Worker Type: Employee Worker Sub-Type: Classified Cost Center: CC001152 DLAR Division Of Laboratory Animal Resources Pay Rate Type: Hourly Pay Grade: University-04 Pay Range: 33,339.00 - 47,509.00 - 61,680.000 Scheduled Weekly Hours: 40 Work Shift: Job Description: 1.1 Colony Management- 35% Manage and work effectively and efficiently with collaborators and other groups who need Colony Management support. Establish and implement breeding schemes to optimize the number of animals required for numerous investigators on campus following approved research protocols. Collect tissue samples and store them, deliver them to research staff, or send them to Transnetyx for the purpose of genotyping. Wean litters and set up breeding cages as required to meet research needs. Train researchers across campus in colony management basic skills. Guide DLAR and research personnel in colony management techniques and theory. Collect samples and perform duties for the Cross Foster program. 1.2 Colony Database Management- 30% Maintain records of colony status, procedures performed, and actions taken. Notify staff of abnormalities and discrepancies in a timely manner. Maintain a database of all animals utilized through DLAR colony management services for each research colony. Transfer animals to other researchers as requested. Order Transnetyx supplies and notify the supervisor when other supplies are needed. Ensure that all billable costs are communicated to the Diagnostic Lead Technician or Laboratory Supervisor for invoicing. Maintain records for the DLAR training rodent colonies. Assist with the oversight of the Cross Foster program. 1.3 Veterinary Diagnostic Lab Duties- 15% Perform requested tests on blood samples collected by departmental staff or researchers. Collect blood for testing as requested following the approved research protocol. Perform RT-PCR analysis of samples for pathogens for cross-foster program or follow-up sentinel testing. Prepare and ship samples to outside labs for analysis. Assist as needed with Technical Service procedures or training(s). Ensure that all billable costs and supplies needed are communicated to the Diagnostic Laboratory Supervisor or others as needed. Perform daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance for all machines in the lab space; calibrate machines in the lab; maintain -80 freezer. Complete accurate records of all tests performed, data collected, necropsies performed, and tissues collected. Cross-train lab and other departmental personnel on maintenance and utilization of diagnostic machines. Assist with necropsies; perform necropsies of rodents as needed; collect biological samples. File and store samples and slides. Follow proper guidelines for chemical and waste use/disposal. Maintain a beetle colony for use in necropsy procedures. Guide lab personnel in necropsy techniques and record keeping. 1.4 Animal Shipment and Transfers- 10% Perform procedures for animal import/export (non-approved vendors). Use the electronic ordering system to process orders. Communicate with other institutions to arrange shipments. Gather any information required by other institutions for approval. Review and summarize all supplied information to communicate with a DLAR veterinarian or receiving institution for approval. Arrange for animals for shipment; prepare and pack animals for transport. Check the health of animals received and animals for export. Keep records of all imports/exports performed. Ensure that all billable costs are communicated to the Diagnostic Laboratory Supervisor. Apply ectoparasite treatments to the imported rodents; collect samples for quarantine testing, ship the samples, and report the results. Communicate the results to husbandry staff and researchers for release. Place transfers in census software to release the animals from quarantine into the appropriate animal housing. Ensure animal testing and release of transfers are done in a timely manner. 1.5 Environmental and Health Monitoring- 5% Assist with the DLAR sentinel program for the control of disease and pathogens in animal housing areas. Order animals and supplies as requested. Collect blood, tissue, and swab samples for testing. Communicate with facility supervisors about schedule and sampling needs. Ship the samples appropriately to the testing center(s). Perform necropsies as needed on sentinel animals. Report results when received. Perform ATP swabbing in each animal facility quarterly and upload data promptly. 1.6 Performs Other Duties as Assigned
