Engineering Support Specialist

We are seeking a motivated Engineering Support Specialist to join our Materials and Mechanicals Development team in the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State. You will contribute to various research activities throughout the Advanced Manufacturing and Materials Engineering Division. A wide range of materials machining and fabrication methods are critical to existing and emerging research covering ceramic, metallic, polymeric and hybrid structures. On-site training is expected to evolve to independent tasking for daily project support. You will: Apply practical engineering assignments that include facility and experimental support hardware lay-out and design, fabrication, assembly and test Facility maintenance and repair of capital and test equipment in support of various projects Meet with faculty and staff engineers to define the scope of task requirements, and schedule constraints, communicates with engineers and project managers to provide progress reports and facilitating the identification of resources needed to accomplish the task/project Perform daily specimen and coupon fabrication operations and fabrication of facility and test equipment Responsible for the equipment maintenance and operations including repair Train and oversee daily operation of laboratory-scale fabrication equipment Inspect, test, and calibrate equipment as directed Assess and identify system faults, and adjust and repair as directed Assist senior technical/engineering staff in gathering, compiling, and archiving test data in the laboratory or in the field May work as part of a test project support team, including selected task leadership roles, in the laboratory, or in the fieldMay develop and provide documentation for task procedures and process evaluation Required skills/experience include: Mechanical and Engineering design Past success operating CNC machinery Demonstrated ability to assemble and test mechanical components Microsoft Office, basic computer tasks, general office computer knowledge+ Preferred skills/experience include: CNC programmings Small parts assembly Mechanical CAD layout and schematic capture ARL at Penn State is an integral part of one of the leading research universities in the nation and serves as a University center of excellence in defense science, systems, and technologies with a focus in naval missions and related areas.
