Veterinary Technologist Position

The Penn State College of Medicine, Department of Comparative Medicine in Hershey, PA is seeking a Veterinary Technologist. This position supports six faculty veterinarians and four veterinary residents in providing animal health care and professional services that advance the research mission of the College of Medicine. Key responsibilities include: Observe animals and use independent judgment to assess signs of pain, distress, abnormalities, sickness, or injury, reporting concerns as needed for veterinary intervention. Administer treatments to animals under veterinary direction. Perform specialized and complex tasks, including research procedures, data collection, anesthesia delivery and monitoring, and preparation of laboratory animals for surgery. Assist with animal restraint, medical treatments, and sample collection. Under the direction of the Director of Training, coordinate and provide hands-on training to research staff, animal care personnel, and students. Demonstrate and train others in experimental procedures, aseptic techniques, anesthesia monitoring, animal restraint, equipment use, and related topics. Assist with training class logistics, including setup, supply ordering, and equipment preparation. Ensure compliance with federal regulations in maintaining the animal program. Anesthetize, prepare, and monitor animals undergoing specialized imaging procedures (e.g., MRI, ultrasound) following SOPs, and oversee recovery until transfer to research staff. Support research projects by performing standardized experimental manipulations such as oral gavage, drug administration, sample collection, and data recording. Maintain an inventory of drugs and supplies, including ordering, auditing stock for expiration, and fulfilling requests. Assist with operating room preparation, surgical instrument processing, and anesthesia equipment maintenance. Support veterinary staff in herd health maintenance, including vaccinations, anthelmintic treatments, hoof trimming, and related procedures. Maintain accurate records of time, materials, drugs, and supplies used for cost analysis and chargebacks. Schedule & qualifications: Participation in a rotational schedule to provide weekend and holiday coverage in support of program operations is required. Preferred qualifications: Certification as a Veterinary Technologist or Laboratory Animal Technologist, which may substitute for years of experience. Minimum education, work experience & required certifications: Associate Degree 4+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted.
