Mount Sinai Hospital 5 North is a 43-bed medical/surgical unit staffed by registered nurses, CNAs, Unit Secretaries, and Telemetry Techs. Embedded within 5 North is a four-bed Medical Step-down Unit (MSU), for patients requiring a higher level of monitoring and care. Patients admitted to 5 North typically need non-invasive cardiac monitoring due to acute or chronic illnesses. The unit also cares for patients requiring long-term mechanical ventilation. Mt. Sinai Hospital is a Certified Chest Pain Center and a Primary Stroke Center; patients meeting criteria for these are admitted to 5 North.
The caregivers on 5 North/MSU are committed to providing excellent care. We believe education and discharge planning are key to empowering patients and families for self-care at home. We collaborate closely with physicians, social workers, physical therapists, dietitians, and other healthcare team members to ensure patients and families receive the highest level of care and information for informed healthcare decisions.
Staffing and scheduling are important to our nursing staff. Caregivers can request their schedules via self-scheduling, and can request days off, shift switches, and overtime shifts. We are working toward a patient:RN ratio of 4:1 and expanding our MSU to nine beds to better meet patient needs. If you seek a challenging environment with diverse patient care needs, 5 North is the unit for you!
