Purpose of Position
To supplement Pathologists services in providing the highest quality of testing.
Description 1. Ensures the satisfaction of all users of the department's services, both internal and external and seeks to continually improve customer service and satisfaction. 2. Performs duties as directed by Pathologists including autopsies and gross examinations. 3. Performs gross surgical specimen exams under the direction of a Pathologist. 4. Performs autopsies at various locations (i.e. within this facility, at another hospital, funeral home, etc.) 5. Organizes and submits tissue sampled during autopsy for processing. 6. Reviews findings with a Pathologist during and/or following the procedure. 7. Assists the Histology staff in the processing and evaluation of tissue specimens. 8. Assists Anatomic Pathology Supervisor and pathologists in maintaining the Quality Assurance/Quality Control Program. Designs and implements Quality Assurance projects, collect data, summarize results and makes recommendations. 9. Maintains assigned section procedure manuals in compliance with CAP and NCCLS standards and review/revises them as necessary and at least annually. 10. Presents in-services to the staff on topical issues in Anatomic Pathology and Histology as requested by the section supervisor and pathologists. 11. Photographs specimens as needed for Pathology records and maintains collection of photograph material for Anatomic Pathology and Autopsy Service. 12. Practice efficient and economical use of laboratory supplies; checks the inventory, orders supplies and restocks upon arrival. 13. Maintains harmonious and cooperative relations with fellow employees, medical staff, patients and guests and serves effectively as part of the Laboratory team in performing professional service to patients. 14. Maintains work areas in a clean, sanitary and free of clutter condition for the safety of patients, guests and staff. 15. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise. 16. Maintains a thorough knowledge of departmental and hospital policies and procedures as they pertain to the area. 17. Consistently provides service excellence to all patients, family members, visitors, volunteers and co-workers. 18. Performs other work-related duties and activities as assigned or requested.
Qualifications • Ability to read, write and communicate in English. • Master's Degree in Pathology or related science from an accredited college or university (copy of degree or transcript required). • ASCP certified or will obtain certification within 6 months. • Minimum of two years work experience as a Pathologist's Assistant preferred. • Must have demonstrated leadership and teambuilding skills. • Strong organizational, communication and problem-solving skills are essential.
