Variable Days Position Summary:
Provides Radiation Oncology Department with physics services to ensure a high level of radiation treatment quality and patient/staff safety. Participates in radiation equipment/software quality assurance program, treatment planning procedures, brachytherapy and special procedures, ensuring radiation equipment performance/maintenance, radiation safety and staff training. Works with guidance and supervision concentrating on one therapeutic modality. Essential Functions and Responsibilities as Assigned: Assists in establishment of radiation beam characteristics for clinical usage. Calibrates radiation therapy equipment, performs quality assurance checks, and coordinates with service engineering to perform basic troubleshooting and repairs. Consults with clinical and medical staff on simulation and patient setups, and treatment planning. Provides ongoing oversight of quality and safety of patient treatment delivery. Provides treatment planning (external beam, brachytherapy) and performs quality assurance checks. Responsible for brachytherapy source storage, inventory, accountability, safety handling, ordering procedure preparation, and participation in procedures. Maintains record keeping and regulatory compliance, machine registration, license renewal and amendment. Assists with facility planning, shielding design and evaluation. Provides radiation safety protection guidance for the cancer center and staff training. Attends Radiation Safety Committee. Participates in department quality assurance and continuous quality improvement programs. Participates in clinical research efforts. Participates in clinical training of radiation oncology staff where applicable. Provides support to network sites as necessary. Performs other related duties as required and directed. Qualifications: Required: Master’s or PhD degree in medical physics or related discipline. Eligible for certification in therapeutic medical physics from American Board of Radiology (ABR) or equivalent certification from Canadian College of Physicists in Medicine (CCPM). Obtains certification within three years of employment as medical physicist I.
