The Iowa State Public Defender’s Office is seeking a highly motivated, skilled, and enthusiastic attorney to serve as a Public Defender 2 in our Davenport office located in Scott County, Iowa. Who We Are The mission of the Office of the State Public Defender is to ensure that all indigent persons in Iowa are provided high quality legal representation in criminal, juvenile, and other eligible proceedings in the most efficient and fiscally responsible manner. What You’ll Do As a Public Defender attorney in this position, you will: Advocate for indigent clients in assigned cases at every stage of the criminal justice system. Receive training and mentoring from experienced public defenders in an environment that encourages professional growth. Represent clients in court at pre-trial hearings, trials, sentencings, and other hearings. Prepare defenses by conducting legal research, gathering facts, and interviewing clients and witnesses. Conduct pretrial discovery, including depositions, plea withdrawals, and motions to suppress. Negotiate plea bargains, dismissals, or other case dispositions with prosecutors. Work closely with clients to discuss case strategies and trial preparations. Maintain communication with clients regarding case updates and questions. Identify legal issues, research applicable law, and draft motions and briefs. Prepare legal documents such as arraignments, pleas, motions, briefs, and letters. May oversee investigators' work per office policies. Maintain case files, prepare time reports, and close files according to office policies. This is a non-merit position for the Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals & Licensing - Public Defender. Positions are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise. Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements: Graduation from an accredited law school, a current license to practice law in Iowa, and at least two years of full-time legal experience in criminal trial advocacy or prosecution.
