The Database Administrator manages and maintains database performance, security, and availability for executive branch agencies across various platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure, Exadata, standalone) using Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Amazon Aurora, and Google BigQuery. Key responsibilities include database design and implementation, ongoing maintenance including upgrading, performance monitoring and optimization, backup/recovery, and security management.
This position is currently a hybrid of both in-office ( 2 days a week required in office and any mandatory in office meetings ) and remote work days (work must be performed in Utah). Please note, a position's eligibility for remote work is established by agency management and is subject to change at their discretion at any time and for any reason. Health Insurance - Public Employee Health Program (PEHP):
3 medical plan options. Choose a Traditional or High Deductible Health Plan. There is an Opt-Out Cash Benefit option for those that have other medical insurance coverage. 5 dental plan options, with an Opt-Out Cash Benefit option for those that have other dental insurance coverage. 4 vision plan options under EyeMed or OptiCare Retirement - Utah Retirement Systems (URS)

Employees who have any service credit with an employer covered by the Utah Retirement Systems prior to 7/1/2011 are in the Tier I Public Employees System.
Employees hired on or after 7/1/2011 and who have never been in the URS retirement system have two options for retirement in the Tier II System. Tier 2 Hybrid Retirement System. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary between both plans (pension and 401(k)) Tier 2 Defined Contribution Plan. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary to a 401(k) plan only.
Employer contributions to your 401(k) are vested after four years. Paid Time Off

provides support to, and enables other state agencies to fulfill their core missions. Responsibilities:
Set up, configure, and prepare database instances and infrastructure across various platforms (cloud and on-premise) to support externally developed database designs.
Administer, maintain, and support a diverse range of databases such as Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Amazon Aurora, and Google BigQuery.
Monitor database performance proactively and implement tuning and optimization strategies (e.g., query tuning, indexing) to ensure smooth operation.
Manage database deployments and operations across various cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) and on-premise environments (Exadata, standalone servers).
Establish, test, and maintain robust backup and recovery protocols to safeguard data integrity and ensure rapid restorability.
Implement and enforce comprehensive database security measures, including managing user permissions, access controls, and data encryption.
Troubleshoot and resolve database-related issues and performance bottlenecks to maintain system stability and availability.
Collaborate with executive branch customer agencies to understand their data needs and translate them into effective database solutions.
Ensure the high availability and reliability of critical database systems to support continuous agency operations.
Stay current with emerging database technologies and best practices, particularly within cloud environments, to recommend and implement improvements.
Exposure to DevOps methodologies and CI/CD pipelines.
Required/Minimum Qualifications
Direct, hands-on experience in database administration within a production environment.
Solid understanding and practical experience in database administration of cloud-native database services, like Amazon Aurora and/or Google BigQuery.
Demonstrated expertise with preferably two distinct relational database systems (e.g., Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL).
Proven experience managing and optimizing databases in public cloud environments (AWS, GCP, and/or Azure).
Proficiency in SQL for querying, manipulating data, and analyzing query performance.
Strong working knowledge of database backup, recovery, and disaster recovery methodologies.
Experience implementing and maintaining database security measures, including user management, permissions, and encryption.
Demonstrated ability to perform database performance monitoring, tuning, and troubleshooting to resolve bottlenecks.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently or with a team and communicate technical solutions effectively.
Additional or Preferred Qualifications Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
Active Associate-level or higher cloud certification (e.g., AWS Certified Database - Specialty, Azure Database Administrator Associate, Google Cloud Professional Cloud Database Engineer).
Experience with database automation tools and scripting (e.g., Python, PowerShell, shell scripting) for routine tasks, deployments, or monitoring.
Familiarity with Data Warehousing concepts and ETL processes, particularly in cloud environments.
Working knowledge of Exadata or other high-performance on-premise database appliances.
Experience in cloud cost management and optimization strategies related to database services (e.g., reserved instances, savings plans).
Employment contingent on passing a drug screening and a background check. Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc. Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying light items; driving an automobile, etc. Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
