Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, Massachusetts
The Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) and Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians (HMFP), the physician organization of BIDMC, are seeking applications and nominations for the position as the first Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery. An academic appointment as Full or Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at Harvard Medical School (HMS) will be commensurate with experience, training, and achievements in addition to teaching activities.
As a new department at BIDMC, there will be an opportunity for the successful candidate to develop and shape this unit, including further development of its vascular, deep brain stimulation, and spinal surgery programs. Most importantly, BIDMC and HMFP are also embarking on a long-term care collaboration with the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI). Thus, a critical part of this position will be to expand and support a robust, multidisciplinary brain and spine tumor program.
BIDMC is consistently ranked among the top hospitals in the US, in terms of its research portfolio, educational programs, innovation initiatives, and strong clinical efforts across all areas of medicine and surgery.
Applicants should have a proven record of significant academic accomplishment and demonstrate the leadership skills to nurture and enhance the research, teaching, and clinical portfolios of an outstanding Department of Neurosurgery. This individual will have far-reaching and impactful leadership responsibilities across BIDMC, its affiliates, and its growing network. They will also serve as a member of the HMS-wide Neurosurgical Executive Committee, which collaborates academically with the other HMS teaching hospitals. Therefore, they must have exemplary administrative, operational, financial, academic mentoring, and communication acumen, not only to build and lead the department, but also to engage with institutional, departmental, and divisional leaders, the Harvard community, as well as the regional, national, and international neurosurgical communities.
