Job Description
In the role of Lead System Engineer - Observability, you will be responsible for leading the technical direction and implementation of Visa's monitoring and observability platform. This platform is essential to Visa's business, providing tooling, practices, and visibility that our development and engineering teams leverage to deliver, observe, and maintain Visa's product suite.
You will ensure a low friction, highly secure, highly available, cost-effective, and consistent toolchain to deliver effective tools for monitoring, observing, and operating software within large enterprise compliance and governance frameworks.
You will work closely with operations, infrastructure leadership, software development leadership, architecture, PMO, and vendors globally to deliver these services.
This is a hybrid position. Expectation of days in office will be confirmed by your hiring manager.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
10+ years of relevant work experience with a Bachelor's Degree or at least 7 years with an Advanced degree (e.g., Masters, MBA, JD, MD) or 4 years with a PhD, OR 13+ years of relevant work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
12+ years of work experience with a Bachelor's Degree or 8-10 years with an Advanced Degree, or 6+ years with a PhD
Background in Systems and Software Engineering
Knowledge of AWS, Terraform, GCP, Azure architecture, services, and security (desired)
Proficiency in developing software in Python, Golang, Ruby, C (including defensive programming, error handling, testing frameworks)
Experience designing, automating, maintaining, and optimizing observability platforms (logging, metrics, tracing)
Expertise in large-scale systems using big data technologies like Kafka, Splunk, Prometheus, and other Time Series databases
Knowledge of industry standards and trends related to telemetry and software pipelines
Experience implementing enterprise-scale monitoring and observability toolchains
Knowledge of containers and Kubernetes
Experience consolidating application and system logs at enterprise scale
Experience with automation tools like Chef and Ansible
Experience working remotely across multiple regions and time zones
Autonomous, proactive, and passionate about telemetry platforms and system transparency
Empathetic towards software development teams and security and compliance conscious
Strong communication skills and openness to constructive feedback
Understanding of enterprise delivery speed, governance, and cost management
