The Controller is a critical leadership role, reporting to the VP of Finance, and will play a key role in driving financial performance, operational efficiency, and scalable processes across the Company’s restaurant operations. This position will lead the transformation of the Company’s accounting and finance functions, ensuring accurate financial reporting, robust internal controls, and timely month-end close processes. The Controller will oversee all accounting operations—supporting both franchised and company-operated units—and provide financial stewardship that enhances profitability and supports growth initiatives. As a strategic partner to cross-functional leaders including the Head of Growth and VP of Operations, the Controller will deliver meaningful insights, improve unit economics, and implement best-in-class financial systems and processes. We are seeking a hands-on, detail-oriented, and results-driven leader who thrives in a fast-paced, evolving environment and is passionate about building strong financial foundations to support iconic, franchisor brands.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting Operations & Financial Oversight
Oversee all accounting functions for both franchised and company-operated restaurants, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll accounting, and fixed assets.
Manage and develop a high-performing accounting team, setting clear objectives, providing ongoing coaching, and fostering a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and operational excellence.
Ensure timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and year-end closes, delivering complete and GAAP-compliant financial statements across all entities.
Maintain and enforce strong internal controls and accounting policies, ensuring compliance with corporate standards and regulatory requirements.
Direct the reconciliation of key balance sheet accounts (e.g., cash, inventory, prepaid expenses, accruals) and resolve discrepancies promptly.
Coordinate with external auditors and tax advisors for audits, tax filings, and other compliance requirements.
Franchise & Royalty Revenue Accounting
Manage accounting and reporting related to franchisee revenue streams, including initial franchise fees, ongoing royalties, advertising fund contributions, and territory development agreements.
Ensure proper tracking, billing, and reconciliation of franchise payments, working with Legal and Franchise Development to maintain compliance with franchise agreements.
Systems, Reporting & Process Improvement
Implement and maintain efficient financial systems and tools (e.g., ERP, POS integrations, BI dashboards) to streamline reporting, enhance data accuracy, and support real-time decision-making.
Identify and implement continuous process improvements to enhance accounting accuracy, close efficiency, and reporting quality.
Executive Reporting & Cross-Functional Support
Support the VP of Finance in preparing monthly financial performance packages, management reports, and board materials, ensuring clarity, insight, and relevance to key stakeholders.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline; CPA designation strongly preferred.
7+ years of progressive accounting and financial leadership experience, including direct oversight of accounting operations, financial reporting, and team development.
Industry experience in restaurant, retail, or multi-unit service businesses highly desirable.
Background in public accounting, with Big Four experience considered a strong advantage.
Proficiency in ERP and accounting systems, with a strong preference for NetSuite; comfortable navigating integrations with POS, payroll, and reporting tools.
Advanced Excel skills and strong competency in financial modeling, data analysis, and performance reporting.
Demonstrated success in building and managing high-performing teams in fast-paced, dynamic environments.
Strong project management, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills, with the ability to drive process improvements and influence key stakeholders.
Comfortable operating in an entrepreneurial, growth-oriented setting with changing priorities and evolving structures.
Experienced in building, mentoring, and leading high-performing accounting and finance teams. Known for fostering a culture of accountability, continuous learning, and operational excellence. Strong track record of developing staff capabilities and elevating team performance in fast-paced environment.
