Development Engineer IV - Dynamic Modeling & Simulation.
The Development Engineer IV will lead the development, calibration, and deployment of dynamic system models for commercial HVAC products including chillers, air handlers, and applied terminal systems. This role focuses on building dynamic models to support control strategy development, performance optimization, and model-in-the-loop (MiL) testing using Modelica/Dymola and FMI-based simulation environments.
Operating as a technical expert and internal consultant, this individual will also provide technical leadership in the development of primary systems and subsystems of commercial HVAC equipment. They will work cross-functionally to integrate simulation tools into the product development lifecycle, guide simulation best practices, and support innovative HVAC product development efforts. Additionally, this individual will mentor junior engineers and support simulation strategy through collaboration with test labs, controls teams, and global engineering partners.

What you will do:
Develop and validate physics-based dynamic models of HVAC systems including compressors, heat exchangers, expansion devices, and control logic
Lead efforts to interface Modelica models with Simulink, Python, and testing frameworks via FMI/FMU
Drive the execution of the new product development phase-gate process, ensuring appropriate design maturity across various milestones
Collaborate across global teams to define modeling requirements and standardize toolsets, workflows, and modeling libraries
Act as a subject matter expert in dynamic system behavior and model-driven design, providing guidance to engineering and controls teams
Mentor junior engineers and contribute to internal training materials and simulation process documentation
Explore opportunities to integrate AI/ML techniques for model calibration, system behavior prediction, or controller tuning
Develop test plans and perform testing of components, subsystems, and total systems to support performance, reliability, and certification
Translate product requirements into engineering concepts and system-level designs
Understand and apply engineering tools such as DOE, DFMEA, and DVP&R
Provide project management leadership and technical ownership for assigned programs

Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
7+ years of relevant experience in dynamic simulation of HVAC systems
Expert-level experience with Modelica-based tools (e.g., Dymola) and the FMI standard
Proficiency with Python, MATLAB/Simulink, and structured simulation workflows
Deep understanding of HVAC&R systems, including thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat exchangers, compressors, oil circulation effects, and control logic
Experience developing, calibrating, and troubleshooting complex dynamic models for thermodynamic systems
Strong communication and presentation skills with the ability to clearly convey technical information
Ability to lead technical project teams and mentor junior engineers
Knowledge of systems engineering and architecture principles
Work visa sponsorship is not available for this position
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with MiL and HiL simulation workflows
Background in experimental data acquisition and validation of simulation models using test data
Familiarity with controls development and embedded system integration
Exposure to AI/ML techniques for modeling, prediction, or automation
Experience working with or across international engineering teams

Individual base pay will depend on a wide range of factors including your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
