Are you looking for a fun place to work? Come join our food service team at the Virginia Zoo! We are seeking a Seasonal Food Service Shift Lead to oversee daily operations and assist staff. Responsibilities include supporting the cook staff, operating registers, and ensuring a positive guest experience. The role requires weekend availability, but offers great hours. The Zoo is open from 9:30am 4:00 PM, 7 days a week including most holidays. This is a non-exempt, seasonal part-time position reporting to the Food Services Manager, with up to 32 hours per week. The position operates from July 2025 to April 2026. Essential Functions and Responsibilities Customer Service Provide high-quality service to guests, monitor and communicate deficiencies to Food Service Managers. Assist guests at the restaurant and concession stands, representing the Zoo professionally.
Cash Handling
Uphold financial controls, handle cash, credit card payments, and operate POS systems. Review cash drawers and deposits at shift end.
General Operations
Open and close shifts within Zoo hours. Support after-hours events, receive food deliveries, restock supplies, and troubleshoot equipment. Maintain records of food waste and staff logs, enforce SOPs, and assist with food prep as needed.
Food Handling Standards
Maintain cleanliness in food areas, understand food rotation, and complete TIPS training for alcohol sales.
Requirements
High school diploma or GED with food service training. 1-2 years of supervisory experience preferred. Strong problem-solving, communication, math skills, and a positive attitude. Ability to work flexible hours including weekends, and possess a Food Handlers Card.
