SMC is actively looking for a Mid-Level Mechanical Engineer/Designer to execute mechanical design for mission critical projects. Typical project types include the design of greenfield and brownfield data center facilities, fit-out packages for hyperscale and enterprise colocation clients, data center campus planning, conceptual designs, feasibility studies, and various system calculations.
This candidate should be capable of executing basic mechanical design projects independently, developing design plans and specifications for permitting and construction. They should also serve as a key contributor within a larger mechanical design team on complex projects, under the guidance of a senior engineer. The scope includes interfacing with design leads within SMC (electrical, telecommunications, fire protection, plumbing) and externally with architectural, civil, and structural teams.
The ideal candidate will be comfortable mentoring recent graduates and junior staff, reviewing work, and collaborating with senior engineers to achieve project goals.
Responsibilities
This role involves executing mechanical designs across various project types, coordinating with clients and multidisciplinary teams, and leading smaller projects. Effective communication and meeting deadlines are essential.
Responsibilities include:
Producing detailed design documents using Autodesk Revit.
Performing airside and hydronic calculations for mechanical systems.
Developing hydronic and airflow diagrams.
Selecting and specifying HVAC equipment.
Meeting project deadlines and working necessary hours.
Understanding local codes and project specifications.
Using Microsoft Office tools effectively.
Traveling to project sites as needed (approximately 10-20%).
Communicating clearly in writing and speech.
Leading junior engineers and designers, coordinating tasks for specific design elements.
Mentoring and training junior staff.
Managing multiple tasks with strong organizational skills.
Qualifications
4-year degree in mechanical or architectural engineering with a focus on mechanical systems; 2-year degrees and MET degrees with experience considered.
At least 4 years of HVAC design experience, particularly with Autodesk Revit.
Experience in mechanical design for large industrial and commercial buildings; mission critical experience is a plus.
Experience across the construction process, including schematic design, construction administration, submittal review, and fieldwork.
Experience leading small teams and client interaction.
Familiarity with construction management tools like Procore and Autodesk Construction Cloud.
Basic controls knowledge is advantageous.
Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) certification preferred.
Compensation
Base salary ranges from $90,000 to $225,000, depending on education, experience, skills, and location.
