Scope of Responsibility:
The person will be responsible for animal health and welfare. Ensure animals are handled and used in humane ways at Lampire. To ensure Lampire is compliant with state and federal regulations. Ensuring that animal studies are run with the goal of providing consistent, high quality products and services to our customers.
Supervisory Responsibilities: None
Position Requirements: Qualifications based upon education, resume and/or work experience.
Pennsylvania veterinary license
Minimum of 5 years' experience in a practicing environment
Minimum of 5 years' experience working with laboratory animals.
Farm animal husbandry background or experience a plus.
Good oral and written communication skills (English) and mathematics skills are required.
Windows-based computer skills, familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel
Good organizational skills with ability to manage multiple priorities.
Experience with cGMP quality systems and manufacturing operations
Ability to give directions and communicate effectively.
Responsibilities Include (but are not limited to):
Overseeing the Lampire Animal Care and Use Program
Managing the Program of Veterinary Care
Participating and holding voting membership as the Attending Veterinarian on the Institutional Animal Care and Use Program
Assist in preparation of investigation reports as part of the Corrective and Preventive Action (CAPA) program.
provide training for routine clinical procedures and to animal care staff.
prescribe and direct all clinical treatments.
Member of Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)
Other duties as assigned.
Education: Minimum of a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or Veterinariae Medicinae Doctoris (VMD).
Animal Care and Use Program Complete familiarization with all Animal Care and Use Programs associated SOP
Regularly and clearly communicate all veterinary and animal care program needs to the attending veterinarian, facility and or department managers
In conjunction with the attending veterinarian provide guidance to the facility animal care staff on all aspects of animal husbandry and housing
Provide the facility management guidance on animal procurement, quarantine and stabilization and biosecurity
Veterinary Care Program Complete familiarization with all Veterinary Care Programs associated SOP
Maintain onsite compliance and supporting documentation with the requirements outlined in the Lampire Veterinary Care Program and all regulatory oversight bodies
Assist in administrating on site, preventative medicine, health surveillance, diagnosis, medical treatment, necropsy, establishment of sedation, anesthetic and analgesics, handling, and immobilization
In conjunction with the attending veterinarian provide guidance to the animal care staff on possible adverse clinical complications that may arise from experimental procedures
Prescribe treatments
In conjunction with the attending veterinarian provide guidance and oversight to surgery programs and perioperative care
Provide surgical support for clinical procedures when required
Maintain communications of all veterinary care to the attending veterinarian, department or facility managers as required by the location of the animal housing unit
Provide the attending veterinarian, department or facility managers updated veterinary care information no less than the minimum requirement as outline in Lampire's Veterinary Care Program
IACUC Participate as an ad hoc for IACUC protocol review and site visits when requested.
Training In conjunction with the attending veterinarian provide oversight and training for routine clinical procedures, surgical procedures and yearly refresher training
Other Participation in animal welfare audits from regulatory compliance bodies and clients
Assist in researching alternative methodologies as it relates to the study programs, veterinary and animal care
Assist in preparation of investigation reports as part of the corrective and preventive action program when required
Work directly with the facility staff to improve capabilities and communications.
Physical Requirements: This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, and crouching at various times throughout the day. The employee will need to be able to lift and/or move items up to 50 pounds.
Working Conditions: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to extremes in temperature, and occasionally farm equipment. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can vary from minimal to loud.
