Who You’ll Work With This role is working with our Structured Settlements group, reporting directly into the Head of Structured Settlements. About The Role This position oversees and manages the Structured Settlement Medical Underwriting Program and a team of medical underwriters, and represents the medical underwriting team in business processes and company-wide underwriting risk management activities. Responsibilities Establishing medical underwriting guidelines, policies, and procedures regarding risk assessment, processing, and operational risk relevant to the structured settlements business, and within the overall underwriting philosophy, guidelines, and procedures

Underwriting complex cases to assign reduced life expectancies in an independent manner within approved authority guidelines

Managing and providing daily direction to medical underwriting staff, medical consultants, clerical staff, and third-party vendors

Overseeing and monitoring performance of the team and the processes, including establishment and coordination of regular peer reviews and reviews of sold cases

With assistance from internal and external resources, researchers, and consultants, maintains the medical underwriting manual

Regularly reviews appropriateness of underwriting authorities

Establishing the training program for new hires

Responsible for periodic review of underwriting program and adjusting policies and procedures accordingly

Overseeing the medical underwriting workflow process, from intake of requests to delivery of results to agents and the monitoring of underwriting results

Working with management, the pricing team, and experience studies team to make appropriate adjustments to the underwriting program to align with actual mortality experience and profit targets

Working with management and the product development team to establish medical underwriting policies and procedures for new products and new markets

Please note this is not an exhaustive list of all responsibilities of the position, and the requirements of the job may change in line with business needs. Skills and Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in a related field

Completion of advanced clinical, medical, or insurance underwriting designations and/or licensing

Professional industry designations a plus

Strong and extensive clinical background (e.g. Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) or advanced life underwriting designation (FALU, CLU).

5+ years’ experience in medical underwriting, preferably in the structured settlement industry or substandard life or annuity industries.

Experience maintaining risk management standards, policies, and guidelines

Experience with medical research and documentation practices

Experience with peer-review and other quality control initiatives

Experience leading and directing other team members and working with physicians and other medical and insurance professionals

Broad and deep knowledge of disease processes and medical conditions

Life insurance and underwriting designation(s) highly desirable (e.g. AALU, FALU, FLMI, CLU, CSSC, etc.)

Experience researching impairments, conditions, and treatments using multiple publications and resources including ability to concisely summarize findings

Ability to work across functional units to communicate ratings and reevaluate based on new information and competitive intelligence

Moderate computer proficiency and prior experience using workflow and data management applications

Strong analytical and interpretive skills

Strong communication skills, both verbal and written

Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment

Strong organizational skills

Commitment to quality

Ability and commitment to work in a team environment

Ability to manage multiple projects by understanding criticality and priority, making recommendations, etc.

Ability to manage time and multitask effectively while demonstrating problem solving skills

Ability to maintain composure and professionalism at all times

Ability to adapt to new situations and changing priorities

Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment

Knowledge of claims management procedures a plus

Able to travel as required

Proficiency in Microsoft 365 (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio)

Results oriented

Managerial experience or leadership education preferred
